4 Colombian Children Survived the Jungle After a Plane Crash

Four Colombian children who many thought perished in a plane crash in the Amazon were found alive 40 days after.

Four Colombian children who were reported missing after a plane crash in the Amazon in May were found by the military according to Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

The Colombian children, ages 13, 9, and 4, and a 12-month-old baby are members of the indigenous Huitoto people. They were with three adults including their mother when the plane crashed. Their mom was able to survive for four days before she died.

Surviving the jungle

For 40 days, the kids battled the elements, dangerous animals, and the uncertainty of being rescued. But last week, the military found them after they tracked down footprints and eaten wild fruit were found, giving hope that the kids were alive.

Unknown to many, the Huitoto people have been trained for survival and the kids themselves had basic training according to their Aunt Damarys Mucutuy during an interview with the media.

“When we played, we set up little camps,” she said. The eldest of the kids, Lesly, even knows what fruits should and should not be eaten.

Edwin Paki, one of the indigenous leaders who took part in the rescue efforts, shared that the kids ate flour and seeds to survive.

President Petro thanked the rescuers and those who were part of the search. As for the kids, he said: “They are children of the jungle, and now they are also children of Colombia.”

A big miracle

After a long search, the four kids were finally found last Friday, to the joy of many. They were immediately flown to a hospital in Bogota for treatment.

The children’s grandmother told the media: “I never lost hope, I was always supporting the search. I feel very happy, I thank President Petro and my countrymen who went through so many difficulties.”

Teaching our kids how to survive

The idea of our kids getting stranded in the middle of nowhere without a reliable adult can be quite daunting. This is why it’s important to teach them basic life skills such as swimming, cooking, and identifying what food can be eaten. It might also help to brief them on the emergency go-bags at home and to have a plan in cases of emergencies such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and more.

And for extra measure, we can enroll them in first aid classes. This way, we can help ensure their safety and survival during emergency situations.
