Remembering Ann Turner Cook: The Original Face of Gerber
Ann Turner Cook, who was the face of Gerber, died at the age of 95.
Gerber, which has become a household name through its baby food and products paid tribute to Ann Turner Cook over the weekend, after she died at the age of 95. Ann’s photo has been used on its products through the years.
“Gerber is deeply saddened by the passing of Ann Turner Cook, the original Gerber baby, whose face was sketched to become the iconic Gerber logo more than 90 years ago,” the company said in a statement.
“Many years before becoming an extraordinary mother, teacher, and writer, her smile and expressive curiosity captured hearts everywhere and will continue to live on as a symbol for all babies. We extend our deepest sympathies to Ann’s family and to anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.”
Gerber’s Face
Gerber launched a contest to look for a logo for its brand back in 1928. According to the company’s website, Dorothy Hope Smith, an artist, entered a charcoal sketch of a baby into the contest, which would become the brand’s famous logo.
It wasn’t until 1978 that Ann Turner Cook was revealed to be the baby in the iconic logo. Since then, her face has become synonymous with Gerber’s products.
“The judges fell in love with the baby face Smith drew. And when they chose it as the winner, they insisted that the simple illustration remain a sketch,” the company said.
While Gerber has become known for its baby food, it has also produced other products such as cereals, supplements, and baby products.
