October 15 Is National Pregnancy, Infant Loss Remembrance Day In PH

On October 5, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr signed an executive order, declaring October 15 as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

October commemorates many events. More than Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Down Syndrome Awareness Month, and others, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr declared October 15 as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

Under Proclamation 700, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin, Marcos mentioned: ” the observance of “to honor and remember the infants lost during or shortly after pregnancy and acknowledge the mothers and their families who have suffered through these losses.”

“There is a need to designate a specific day to increase awareness and provide comprehensive support for affected families, including mental healthMental HealthA person's emotional, psychological, and social well-being, which affects how children and parents think, feel, and cope. Open conversations, regular routines, and timely help from professionals make it easier for services, community programs, and informed healthcare guidance,” the proclamation read.

The Department of Health has been tasked to come up with and lead programs in relation to the executive order.

Why the day matters

In the executive order, Marcos mentioned that the observance of the day honors and remembers ” the infants lost during the or shortly after pregnancy, and acknowledge the mothers and their families who suffered through these losses.”

As stated under the constitution, the country recognizes the importance of the health of each Filipino family and awareness of it.

The declaration of October 15 as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day coincides with Baby Loss Awareness Month, which also falls in October.
