What Parents Need To Know About Roblox’s New Safety Features

Roblox unveils four new features to help keep kids safe while they play online. Here’s what you should know — and how you can stay involved

If your child is one of the millions who spend time on Roblox, you might be wondering how safe it is. The good news? Roblox recently introduced a set of updated safety features aimed at giving both kids and parents better control over who they interact with — and how.

These updates, launched this month, reflect the platform’s commitment to online safety. “Our goal is to lead the world in safety and civility for online gaming,” says Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer. “We’ve spent nearly two decades building sophisticated safety systems.”

So, what’s new — and what do you need to do as a parent? Let’s break it down.

Trusted Connections

Roblox has renamed its “Friends” system to “Connections” to help users distinguish between people they know in real life and people they’ve met online. Now, only users marked as Trusted Connections can communicate freely using Party voice and text chat — without content filters.

Safety note for parents

Children under 13 will not have access to Trusted Connections. Roblox will continue to block personal information sharing and monitor messages for younger users.

Age Estimation

To access certain features like Trusted Connections, users must verify they are 13 or older. Roblox uses AI-based facial age estimation, requiring the user to take a short video selfie to confirm their age.

If the system can’t verify the user’s age, Trusted Connections won’t be available. If the user is over 13 but their age remains unconfirmed, a government-issued ID will be required for manual verification.

New Privacy & Well-being Tools

Roblox has also introduced a suite of privacy tools designed to support users’ mental health and boundaries:

  • Online Status Control
  • Do Not Disturb Mode
  • Screen-Time Insights and Controls

These tools were developed in collaboration with the Roblox Teen Council and the Family Online Safety Advisory.

New Parental Insights

For parents of teens aged 13 and up, Roblox has expanded transparency tools, giving you a clearer window into your child’s activity on the app (with their permission). These include:

  • Trusted Connection and Connection Insights
  • Screen-Time Tracking
  • Spending Alerts

Progress in the Right Direction

Roblox is just one of the many games that have been busy ensuring the privacy of information and the well-being of the users. Data nowadays is easily leaked, so tech companies are making sure that they continue to provide safeguards to their products to protect their customers.

As parents, staying informed and involved remains key. These updates offer a fresh opportunity to talk to your kids, not just about Roblox, but about how to build safe, respectful habits in all their digital spaces.
