Parenting, Popcorn, and The Mummy: The Reunion That’s Making Millennials Feel Like Kids Again
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly returning to the franchise that defined an era — and families are ready to pass the adventure on
If you were one of the millennials who grew up watching The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, it looks like there’s going to be a long-awaited reunion.
Several media outlets report that the two, who played American adventurer Rick O’Connell and English teacher-turned-Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan, are in negotiations to return for a new Mummy film.

What We Know So Far
Universal Pictures, the studio behind the Mummy franchise, declined to comment on the matter. However, Deadline reported that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence are set to direct the film. The script is by David Coggeshall, while Sean Daniel, William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment will produce.
A storyline has yet to be announced, though reports of a new Mummy movie have circulated for months, with both Fraser and Weisz said to be attached.
An Unexpected Blockbuster
Fraser and Weisz starred in the first two Mummy films. In The Mummy (1999), their characters Rick and Evelyn meet for the first time as they battle the resurrected high priest Imhotep. In The Mummy Returns (2001), the two are married with a young son, Alex, who’s kidnapped as they face off against the Scorpion King.
The first two films were massive hits, with the original grossing over $422.5 million worldwide.
A third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), only saw Fraser return — this time with Maria Bello as Evie and Luke Ford as a grown-up Alex.
The franchise also spawned a prequel (The Scorpion King starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), an animated series, and a Universal Studios theme park ride.
What This Means for Families
With the reported Mummy reunion, a new generation of kids who missed the original films will get the chance to see why they became such beloved adventure classics. The series evolved into a fun family journey once Rick and Evie’s son Alex joined the action.

If Alex returns in the new film, it could also bring back the dynamic bond between nephew and uncle — Evie’s brother Jonathan remains a vital part of the O’Connell’s adventures.
For millennial parents, the news is more than a pop culture update — it’s a nostalgic reminder of movie nights past, and a chance to share that excitement with their own kids. Until Universal gives the final green light, fans will just have to wait a little longer — or maybe cue up the original Mummy trilogy for a family rewatch.
