Becoming a step-parent isn’t easy, especially when the kids from the previous relationship feel that you’re the reason why their family fell apart. But when they begin to love and accept you, it’s an indescribable joy. When the child chooses you to be their mom, it’s as Camille Prats says for Ice’s 19th birthday message on her Instagram: “It’s [to be called Ice’s mom] one of my biggest blessings. God evidently shows His special love for me through You.”

The Love Between Step Parent and Step Child: A Love Built With Conscious Respect

The challenge in becoming a step-parent means choosing to love a child unconditionally even if they don’t share the same blood as you. It may feel unnatural at first, with a lot of doubts and fears. There are days when step-parents will compare themselves to the birth parent. Other times, they will hear that rejection from the kids themselves. ‘How do I love a child that’s not mine?’ or ‘Is the child okay with me?’ — these questions plague even more experienced parents.

While we’re sure there was an adjustment period for Ice and Camille Prats, the collection of photos she posted of the eldest of the Prats-Yamabao kids is proof that they’ve overcome quite a lot of struggles. He’s become a great kuya; something that Camille is grateful for.

While being a step-parent will always have that extra layer of struggles of earning the child’s acceptance, that doesn’t mean that the struggle will go on forever. Parenting will always have struggles. But knowing that a child accepts you as their parent, despite not being blood-related, is a milestone worth celebrating. And although Ice being an older child means expressing his need for Camille differently, it doesn’t change the love between them. Happy 19th birthday, Ice!
