How Families are Celebrating Eid Al Adha 2023
Also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” here is how families are celebrating or can celebrate Eid Al Adha in 2023.
The Philippines is a mix of so many religious cultures — including Islam! To celebrate with them, the government has declared their holidays such as Eid Al Adha as a regular holiday. This year, the holiday is happening on June 28, 2023. As one of the Islamic holidays celebrated by families worldwide, each one has a way of celebrating what is originally called the “Feast of Sacrifice.” Here are some of the ways that they celebrate Eid Al Adha in 2023:

1. Cooking together as a family
Instead of letting mom (or dad) do all the cooking, parents should encourage their kids to help out, too. Cooking in the kitchen and preparing a big feast for the family is a way to remember how God rewarded Abraham for his faithfulness and instead, offered him a lamb to sacrifice in place of his son. The word “Eid” is Arabic for “celebration” or “festival” with the context of it honoring old traditions.
2. Wearing the best clothes
It doesn’t always mean buying a new set of clothes. At least getting them cleaned, pressed, and prepared is okay. Eid Al Adha encourages families to wear freshly cleaned or new clothes. It’s a way of showing a “renewal of faith” and expressing joy and gratitude. Some moms lay out their children’s clothes and choose what to wear to match. It serves well for family photos, too!
3. A family gift exchange
Known as “Ediya,” families often have an exchange of gifts. They usually pull out names from a kufi (a kind of hat) to see who they’re giving. Babies, however, get lucky: they receive gifts from everyone! Gifts can range from flowers, candles, indoor plants, jewelry, and home-cooked meals. All these are to remind family members how precious they are to one another.
4. Deep clean and de-clutter the house
With Eid Al Adha being a big celebration, it’s going to need a lot of cleaning and decluttering. Besides, a cluttered house means less room for guests to enjoy. Eid Al Adha is also considered a family celebration which means some families invite the whole family over to enjoy the holiday together.
5. Make sure none of your family members are spending it alone on Eid
A family-oriented religion, Islam encourages families to spend it together. Some Muslims even hold big barbecues as a way to adhere to Eid Al Adha’s intention to make sure that every Muslim brother and sister has something to eat. Others would encourage hugging others to help them feel part of the community.

Eid Al Adha 2023: “Eid Mubarak to all who celebrate!”
Islam is one of the major religions in the Philippines, being the backbone of how tightly knit some communities are. Especially when many of the schools in the Philippines are Roman Catholic, Muslim families celebrate Eid Al Adha to remember and remind their kids of their roots. And if we have friends who are Muslim (and we aren’t), wishing them an “Eid Mubarak” may make their celebrations more fulfilling.
