‘I Was Out of Line’: Will Smith Apologizes to Chris Rock After Oscars Incident

Will Smith confronted Chris Rock in defense of his wife Jada when the comedian poked fun at her bald look at the Oscars.

Will Smith apologized to actor-comedian Chris Rock after he punched Chris during the live telecast of the Academy Awards on Monday, March 28 Manila time. He won the Best Actor Award for his role in King Richard. On his social media accounts, he said that his behavior at the event was “unacceptable and inexcusable.”

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally,” he said.

“I’d like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and wrong. I’m embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Will Smith Apologizes to the Academy

In the same post, Will once again apologized to the Academy for his behavior as well as to the viewers who saw the incident.

“I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees, and everyone watching around the world. I’d like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us,” he said.

“I am a work in progress.”

Jada’s Condition

Chris’ joke drew the ire of Will after he poked fun at Jada’s bald look when he said it looked like G.I. Jane, a movie where actress Demi Moore shaved her hair for the role.

The joke, however, did not please Will because Jada battled alopecia areata also known as hair loss.

Jada previously discussed losing her hair, saying it terrified her but later learned to embrace the condition.

“Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something.
Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period,” she said in an Instagram video in 2021.
