Jessie J Comforts Postpartum Moms About Their Bodies
Singer Jessie J posted a letter that talks about what postpartum moms need to hear whenever they look at their bodies.
Postpartum is sometimes when moms are hit most by the regret of what their bodies once were. Once slim and curved, no longer able to wear body-hugging clothes in full confidence without a belly — all these can break a mom’s confidence. But what people forget to tell or assure moms is how magical they are for letting their bodies be “a home for someone else for the last nine months,” as Jessie J says.

“I’m writing this for myself as well as anyone else that needs to read this,” Jessie J adds on her Instagram.
“Celebrate your new body.”
“Your body was a home for someone else to live in for nine months. Your organs have moved and need to find their way back to where they were before. Your uterus is still deflating slowly. Your hormones are flying and crashing. Your body is working the hardest it has ever worked. You are exhausted but you are magical. You grew a whole human. A human who is doing this with you and loves you beyond measure.”
The postpartum period makes moms forget the kind of effort they poured in for the last nine months before their baby was born. The body constantly changes to accommodate the baby’s growth — and it’s a lot of hard work! What’s crazy is some people expect moms to immediately bounce back after having a child. But there’s no shame in having to gently remind them (and yourself) that you just made a human being.
“Take your time. Be easy on yourself, your body, AND your mind. Remember you are in recovery and don’t forget to also remind those around you.”
“It [our body] HAD to change.”
When moms look at their bodies in the mirror, it’s hard to love what they see. Especially when people sometimes make comments about how things used to be like, “What happened to you?” or “You used to look so good!” But Jessie J candidly points out that these people need to “chill” about making comments like that:
“It will be bigger and smaller in different places. IT IS BEAUTIFUL and NATURAL. Ignore the whispers of what some people say you should or shouldn’t look like after a certain time. It’s 2023. People need to chill.”
Postpartum moms may still be coping with the regret of what their bodies once looked like. Especially while they’re trying to make more space for their baby’s things, the first thing that usually goes out is their clothes.
“Your time and YOUR body.”
Every mom has their own postpartum journey. It’s a combination of highs and lows that can make or break our identities as mothers. And although a postpartum body is not our favorite look, it’s a temporary one. Jessie J phrases it well:
“It’s your journey. Your time and YOUR body. It’s not the same as anyone else’s, and that’s what makes it special. You are unique. And when it’s [my body] ready and able to change again it will. Whatever that looks like. I’m here for it.”
Jessie is currently enjoying her “tour” around the house, singing to her favorite audience ever — her son, Sky.
