Everything You Need To Know About Meghan Markle’s Oprah Interview

Now that they’ve stepped away from their senior royal roles, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are ready to talk…

Yesterday, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle opened up to Oprah Winfrey about everything they’ve been through. From motherhood and marriage to their landmark decision to give up their role as senior royals, their controversial move to the US — the couple talked about it all.

Whether you’ve watched or heard about the interview, there’s no doubt that everyone is #shooketh about the shocking revelations Meghan Markle shared during the interview. Here’s what you need to know…

What went down during the Meghan Markle’s Oprah Interview:

1.They were married before their wedding

Remember that crazy spectacle that was the royal wedding in May 2018? Well, Markle and Prince Harry convinced the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welsby to marry them privately before their world premiere.

2. Meghan Markle was silenced by the royal family

Meghan Markle has never been one to shy away from voicing her opinions. In 2015, she gave a speech on International Women’s Day about gender equality that received a standing ovation. She’s written an essay about her pride in her identity. But once linked to Harry, she’s become the victim of many things — including being silenced.

When Winfrey asked her, “Were you silent, or were you silenced,” Markle responded, “The latter.”

“I’ve always valued independence,” Markle said. “I’ve always been outspoken, especially about women’s rights, and that’s the sad irony of the last four years, I’ve advocated for so long for women to use their voice. And then I was silent.”

3. The royal family had issues about Archie’s skin color because Markle is biracial

“In all those months I was pregnant, all around this same time, we have in tandem the conversation ‘He won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title,’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be born,” shares Markle.

4. Meghan Markle was on the verge of suicide at one point

In the interview, Meghan Markle reveals how she felt she was at the brink of suicide. At the time, she was pregnant with Archie and struggling with royal life topped with the harsh treatment of the British press. “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” Markle says. “And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought.”

5. She tried to ask for help and didn’t get any

At one point, Meghan Markle knew she needed help so she did the brave thing and asked for it. And then she was told that she couldn’t because “it wouldn’t be good for the institution”.

6. Harry left because he wasn’t getting the support he needed

The constant stress was getting to Prince Harry — which reminded him of someone who had also suffered in the limelight — his mother. According to Harry, he left because of a “lack of support and lack of understanding”. In fact, his own father, Prince Charles stopped taking his calls. The Royal Family also cut Prince Harry off financially, leaving Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to use his inheritance from Diana.

7. Meghan and Harry are having a girl!

On a lighter note, Meghan and Prince Harry revealed that they were having a daughter. We all hope to meet her (or at least her news about her) this summer!

As painful as the interview was, we’re happy to learn that the family is in a much better place — sunny California to be exact — now. While Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will always be subject to media scrutiny, hopefully this interview will change the way the rest of the world sees Meghan Markle.
