Cinderella’s Stepsisters Get a New Twist in Netflix’s Steps

Netflix is turning the traditional Cinderella narrative upside down, giving the misunderstood stepsisters their own moment in the spotlight

Most of us grew up with the story of Cinderella, automatically learning to view her stepmother and stepsisters as simply the “evil ones.” But Netflix is flipping that classic narrative on its head with Steps, an upcoming animated film premiering this November 20—and it’s shaping up to be a wonderful pick for your next weekend watch with the kids.

What is Steps about?

Think you know the full story behind Cinderella’s infamous stepsisters? Think again.

Tired of living in Cinderella’s perfect shadow, Lilith (voiced by Ali Wong) takes matters into her own hands by stealing the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand. Alongside her sister Margot (Stephanie Hsu), she hijacks the Royal Ball—only for the plan to backfire completely. Cinderella’s fairy tale breaks down, allowing the villainous Priscilla (Nikki Glaser) to swoop in and seize the throne.

To put the kingdom back together, Lilith has no choice but to team up with Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried). Their journey takes them through encounters with biker trolls, outrunning evil henchmen, and navigating the dangerous Screaming Woods. Despite the chaos, the core of their quest is learning to mend their fractured relationship.

A takeaway for the families

Feeling overlooked, dealing with sibling rivalrySibling RivalryCompetition and conflict between brothers and sisters over attention, belongings, and fairness. Parents can ease it by giving each child one-on-one time, avoiding comparisons, and teaching kids to solve disputes, and learning to bridge gaps with family members we’ve bumped heads with are experiences most kids—and adults—understand all too well.

Beyond the humor and action, the movie offers a great opportunity for parents to open up meaningful post-movie conversations with their little ones about jealousy, empathy, teamwork, and forgiveness.

The film also features Bette Midler as the voice of the Fairy Godmother, with direction by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, and production backed by Amy Poehler.

The album also features vocal performances by Amanda Seyfried, Rose Gray, and Emei, with an original score composed by Oscar winner Kris Bowers (Bridgerton).

Steps joins Netflix’s expanding lineup of family animation, alongside titles like KPop Demon Hunters, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Nimona, The Sea Beast, and Klaus.

Steps and its official soundtrack stream globally on Netflix starting November 20, 2026.
