Parents Can Work & Play at Taylor’s Play Café
As working parents try to find more spots to get some work and parenting done, Donnah Montemayor, Bloss Villafuerte, and Rina Montemayor band together to build Taylor’s Play Café
While kids need playgrounds, parents need a place also to get their work done. However, most parents may find themselves frustrated with the overstimulating environment – something that Taylor’s Play Café owners Donnah Montemayor, Bloss Villafuerte, and Rina Montemayor agree is the usual.
“Sometimes, it’s just so frustrating to find a spot that’s quiet enough to get things done but at the same time watch the kids,” Donnah admits.
Thus, Taylor’s Play Café was created. Inspired by the need to find an outlet for her four-year-old daughter Taylor, Donnah built a café that would work hand-in-hand also with Bloss Villafuerte’s Smallville Montessori at Circulo Verde in Calle Industria, Quezon City.
Purposeful in design and play
Although hidden, the little nook has become a haven for parents who want a peaceful place to work and play with their kids. With a designated playground spot for kids ages 0-6, there’s a fence and a raised sitting area for parents to look over while they finish their work. But what Donnah, Bloss, and Rina thought would remain a workspace eventually turned into a café. It was a happy challenge, Donnah admits.
“There was so much to learn about making coffee and food. From the storage to coming up with drinks, we were lucky we found a supplier in Pampanga who could come up with the food,” she reveals.
“The best part is, the majority of the food they provide were our favorites,” Bloss chimes in.
Besides bringing in the favorite foods of both parents and kids, Taylor’s Play Café maintains a calm environment. While most playgrounds had vibrant colors and songs of the kids’ most beloved cartoons blaring through the speakers, Donnah, Bloss, and Rina preferred a more muted design. The pastel and neutral shades of the playground and ball pit, the reading nook in the corner, the music, and even choosing to set it away from a typical mall was all in hopes of mellowing things down. Doing so kept the kids calm and even though they enjoyed playtime, wildly screaming and running was an uncommon occurence.
“We noticed how the music and the colors really influenced the kids,” Bloss explains. “It keeps them calm.”
It’s something even the working parents appreciate, shares Rina. “We’ve had parents even from farther areas like Mandaluyong bring their kids over.
Helping working parents achieve wellness
Perhaps the greatest frustration of most working parents — one that Donnah is familiar with as she raises her daughter — is having to choose whether to work, relax, or be a parent. So the creation of Taylor’s Play Café allows parents to not needing to choose all three. Why not do them all at the same time?
Besides having some playtime, Donnah, Bloss, and Rina hope to add more to the café’s offerings. Classes that would be all year round, events where parents and kids would be able to enjoy together — work should not drag a parent away from their kids. If anything, it is something that allows them to sustain the lifestyle they have so they can make more happy memories with their kids.
Taylor’s Play Café is currently located at G/F, Circulo Verde, The Strip Mall, Calle Industria, Quezon City, 1110 Metro Manila.
