Radson Flores on Mark Gordon: ‘Teenagers Will Love Him’

Radson Flores plays Mark Gordon on Voltes V: Legacy and gives a background on his role’s relationship with Dr. Smith.

After its cinema special, Voltes V: Legacy finally begins its run as a series on GMA Network. The five main stars have waited for three years and for Radson Flores, the role of Mark Gordon is his biggest role to date.

Modern Parenting got to interview Radson where he spoke about Mark’s personality on the show, the relationship with Dr. Richard Smith played by Albert Martinez, and why teenagers will relate to his character.

Getting the role of Mark

When Radson Flores earned the role of Mark Gordon, he had mixed feelings of joy and fear. “I am new to it and I was thinking it was just luck that I got into the audition,” the former Starstruck Avenger admitted. “But like, they [the production team] talked me out of that environment. They were like, ‘You have it in you. You just need to push yourself.'”

Upon getting the role and reading the script, Radson knew Mark’s role was big. As the pilot of the Volt Bomber which forms the arms of Voltes V, Mark is the second in command of the group. Described as the “lone wolf” of the group, Radson believes that Mark brings reasoning into the team.

“Being the most logical one, he [Mark Gordon] doesn’t really rely that much on feelings and emotions. That’s why I think Mark’s character is really heavy and contributes a lot to the series and the team,” he explained.

How Mark Gordon Will Be A Hit Among Teens

Mark Gordon — as both the lone wolf with a shaky relationship with his father figure and being 18 years old in both the anime and live adaptation — Radson feels Mark will be a hit among teens. The character’s origin story stays the same; Radson explains how Mark’s relationship with Dr. Smith was somewhat “on-and-off,” similar to a teenager’s and also an orphan:

“We all know that Dr. Smith was the one who pulled Mark off of his old work. And he was the one who separated him and Alpha [Mark’s horse]. So at first, it was like a shaky relationship. But like, eventually, Mark warmed up to Dr. Smith.”

Like most “lonewolf” characters in the show, Mark Gordon may appear “brooding”, “arrogant”, and “uncaring.” However, it’s those traits that make Mark relatable to teens, appearing — as Radson realizes — “edgy” and “rebellious.”

“He’s really cool. He’s really quiet and he fights really well and rides a horse,” Radson shares. “That’s what makes Mark unique and teenagers want to be unique. I think that’s what makes him an outcast from the other pilots.”

Despite Mark’s brooding demeanor, the live series will reveal a more “human” side to him, according to Radson Flores. “There’s a lot of Mark’s softer side because no one is really looking. May mga scenes na Mark emotes and talks Alpha na in a voice he doesn’t talk to his teammates and Dr. Smith,” he shares.

Radson Flores On Setting Expectations for Mark’s Character

Although aware of how his performance as Mark would be compared to the original, Radson Flores intends to bring more complexity to the character in the live adaptation.

“I think that’s what Voltes V fans will have to expect from Mark. Mas madaming range of emotions na ipapakita compared sa anime na masungit, seryoso. Dito, makikita nila yung pangungulila niya sa parents, yung pagmamahal sa teammates niya, and yung lungkot niya kay Alpha.”

Voltes V: Legacy also stars  Ysabel Ortega, Miguel Tanfelix, Matt Lorenzo, and Rafael Landicho. Dennis Trillo, Albert Martinez, Martin del Rosario, and Carla Abellana are also part of the cast.
