All the Reasons Patrick Dempsey Deserves His Sexiest Man Alive Award
Patrick Dempsey, who rose to fame as Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd in Grey’s Anatomy, and is a father of three, was recently bestowed as People’s Sexiest Man Alive.
If you are a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, then no doubt you’ve encountered Patrick Dempsey. The actor has been in Hollywood for a long time and has done various TV and movie projects. But it would be his roles in Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd and Robert in Enchanted that would make him famous to the audience.
Early this month, People Magazine announced that the Ferrari actor has been bestowed as the Sexiest Man Alive. Regarding the recognition, Patrick, 57 jokingly said: “I was completely shocked, and then I started laughing, like, this is a joke, right? I’ve always been the bridesmaid!”
But more than getting the recognition that has been given to actors like Chris Evans, George Clooney, and Paul Rudd, the recognition also gives him a chance to use his platform wisely.
“It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive.”
More than his looks, here’s why Patrick Dempsey deserves the award.
Patrick Dempsey’s devotion to his family
The Sweet Home Alabama actor has been married to his wife Jillian Fink Dempsey since 1999. He is also a father to Talulah, 21, and their twins Sullivan and Darby, 16.
Asked how his kids will likely respond to his Sexiest Man Award, Patrick said they’ll likely make fun of him. But he told People that they keep him young.
He added that he tries to be there as much as he can for his family. “I just try to be a better person every day and try to be present if I can and be there and listen to the needs of the family and be able to provide for them.”
“And you get feedback from them and improve as a father.”
Patrick credits his wife Jillian for making him come out of his shell
Patrick shared that he and his wife Jillian are opposite but there are things that she can make him do.
“I have to say she’ll make me do things that I never want to do. And 9 out of 10, she’s absolutely correct,” he chuckled. “I go bitch mode and grip until I get over it and I’m like you know, you’re right! So she puts up with me.”
As for date nights, it’s very rare now due to their schedules but just like the shoot for People where Jillian did his grooming, they get a chance to talk to each other in between takes and even have time together.
He’s not afraid to do new roles
While Patrick has been known for his romantic-comedy roles in recent years, he is set to appear in the movie Ferrari, which according to him taught him to take risks.
“I’d been following the movie for years, so I called Michael and said, ‘I want to discuss being a part of this,’” he told People. “That taught me if you really want something, you have to do it yourself.”
According to IMDB, the movie is based on Enzo Ferrari’s auto empire that goes through crisis in 1957. Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz lead the cast with the film hitting cinemas this Christmas in the United States.
He’s passionate about the causes close to his heart
Since 2008, Patrick has been busy with the Dempsey Center which he established in honor of his late mother. The foundation caters to people through personalized and comprehensive cancer care. The foundation is located in Maine, where Patrick is from.
The actor has also used his platform with the center to express his sadness over the October 25 shooting that happened in his hometown Lewiston, Maine where a gunman killed 18 people and injuring 13 others.
Now with some of these reasons, it’s no wonder why Patrick Dempsey deserves the recognition!
