What We Look For In A Brunch Restaurant
Not every parent has time for breakfast. Some of us settle down for brunch instead!
Brunch — a combination of breakfast and lunch — is much appreciated, especially by parents who didn’t have time to prepare themselves breakfast to make sure their kids got to school on time. That short period from 9 AM to 11 AM is also the time we consider the “calm” — with the kids busy in school, we relish the time we have to settle down and have a good meal. But what constitutes as a good, family-friendly brunch restaurant? Here’s what we think!
1. A good selection of coffee
After a stressful morning, we need a place that has good coffee. Some days tend to be more taxing than others; we sometimes want a shot of caffeine and alcohol at the same time. Unfortunately, most cafés stick to the traditional recipes and although it has a kick, it’s not exactly what we’re looking for. Luckily, cafés like St. ALi are bringing in curated coffee creations that make mornings so much better. Their NotGuiness is a must-chug!
2. A hearty meal that goes well with coffee and drinks
As Filipinos, we love our rice meals but, there are days we want something a little more intercontinental. Sandwiches are good but not really something we want if we’re sitting down. And if we’re a little more specific with our diets and palates, we want meals that are high-fiber like a Banana-Passion fruit Granola or high-protein like Turkish Eggs.
But the most frustrating part about finding the perfect brunch café is that either the coffee or the food is good. We want something that’s both.
3. A place that actually knows how to mix a drink
When we say spike, we mean mixing alcohol. Yes, some parents need their shot of booze a little early in the morning to take a bit of the edge off from a stressful morning.
But balancing the flavor profiles of both coffee and alcohol is a tricky affair. One wrong mix and the metallic taste of alcohol can be too strong, leaving us with an alcoholic breath when we meet with other parents which we know can be a total disaster! Making boozy coffee creations takes two things: knowing one’s beans and roasts and being familiar with the alcohol to know what it can best pair up with.
4. A place with a lot of space
Some parents have to bring their smaller kids with them to brunch, especially those who live the “no yaya lifestyle.” With most cafés catering to young professionals, it can be a little off-putting to see the place being a bit too cramp for us to park our kids or at least move around. Besides, if we’re meeting someone for brunch at least choose a place that marries both a casual and professional look to the place.
Brunch restaurants may be more common for parents!
Considering how we’re always rushing our kids to school against the traffic, the only time we do get to decompress is during brunch. We don’t always have to chug down a mimosa or two to make it a brunch; sometimes, we just need great food and coffee. For working parents, brunch restaurants might even be a preferred set-up. With some meetings running long, at least there’s both breakfast and lunch options for us and clients. And with more brunch restaurants like St. ALi popping around, we might have better selections!
