5 Reasons Why US Vice President Elect Kamala Harris Is A True Modern Parent

And the ultimate #girlboss to boot!

We all got the shivers when we heard new US vice president-elect Kamala Harris address the public for the first time. After all, not only is she the first woman to be elected as vice president of the United States, she’s also the first Black woman and woman of South-Asian descent to be in the position. Here’s why we *heart* the new VP:

She’s proof that girls can be whomever they want to be

Vice president. Ice skater. Pastry chef. Nurse. Mother. Kamala Harris proves that everything women have worked so hard for — the right to vote, gender injustice — is worth all the sacrifice. We have always been worthy, Kamala Harris’s election just proved that we are capable of anything and so much more.

Because she’s a doting stepmom to her husband’s children, Cole and Ella

Mamala and her kids.

In an essay for, Kamala — or “Mamala”, as she’s known to her stepkids— waxed lyrical about why she’s so proud to be a stepmom. “They are my endless source of love and pure joy,” VP Kamala Harris writes. “My heart wouldn’t be whole, nor my life full, without them.” *cue tears*

She’s changing the way we see stepmoms

Stepmoms have always had a notoriously bad rep. And it isn’t their fault. You’re literally stepping into someone else’s very, very big shoes — a task not for the faint of heart. Kamala Harris has not only embraced her role as stepmom to her stepkids, she even considers her husband’s ex a close friend. Same goes for FLOTUS Jill Biden, who has been credited by Joe Biden as the person who has made his family whole again. Awwww.

Because she’s fighting for things that MATTER the most to women

Paid parental leave for all parents. Better pay for teachers. Better childcare. She gets it; she knows that these are the issues that matter the most to us and help us become the best moms we can be to our children.

She really, really loves her mama

In her speech, VP Kamala Harris got really emotional and talked about her mother, Shymala Gopalan Harris. “When she came here from India at the age of 19, she maybe didn’t quite imagine this moment,” Harris shared. “But she believed so deeply in an America where a moment like this is possible, and so I am thinking about her, and about the generations of women, Black women, Asian, white, Latina, Native American women, who throughout our nation’s history have paved the way for this moment tonight.”

Our favorite part of the speech? This part, of course: “Every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities. And to the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: dream with ambition, lead with conviction, and see yourselves in a way that others may not, simply because they’ve never seen it before. But know that we will applaud you every step of the way.”

Thank you for all that you do, Vice President Harris. Because of you, women and little girls everywhere believe that dreams really do come true.
