4 Popular Filipino 90s Dance Groups: A Throwback for Parents
Finding yourself getting nostalgic over the 90s? These four Filipino 90s dance groups are definitely a throwback for parents!
The 90s are without a doubt an era that brought some of the best in Philippine music and entertainment. The era paved the way for variety and dance shows like Easy Dancing, Keep On Dancing, and even ASAP. Along with it are the dance groups that headline as a backup of some of the artists. Let’s get nostalgic as we look at four popular Filipino 90s dance groups!
1. Universal Motion Dancers
The Universal Motion Dancers (UMD for short) became known in 1991 and later popularized dance moves such as “Always,” and Simply Red’s “Stars.” Some of its popular members include Wowie de Guzman, who later starred in various movies alongside Judy Ann Santos, Jim, and James Salas, and Miggy Tanchanco, who is now a TV and concert director.
The group, who are dads themselves now, are still active in doing performances. Jim Salas’ son Paul Salas is one of GMA 7’s top young actors.
2. Manoeuvres
The 90s would not be popular for dance moves without the Manoeuvres. Whether they popularized moves to hits such as “Macarena”, “Choo Choo Train,” and “Informer,” or dance as a backup for Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano, the group is definitely a trendsetter in the dance form. Some of its popular members include Michael Flores, and brothers Jason and Joshua Zamora.
Many of its original members continue to perform on special occasions and also dance for Gary.
3. Streetboys
The Streetboys are iconic in their own right. Known for their acrobatic performances, they are managed by one of the country’s top directors, Chito Roño, who directed TV shows such as Mars Ravelo’s Darna and Immortal. He is also known for films such as Feng Shui, Dekada 70s, and Etiquette for Mistresses.
Some of the hits the Streetboys moved to include “Mmbop” by Hanson, “It’s a Beautiful Life” and “I Saw the Sign”. Popular members include Vhong Navarro, Jhong Hilario, Spencer Reyes, and Danilo Barrios.
4. Abztract Dancers
The Abztract Dancers is known for producing the likes of Dingdong Dantes, Arthur Solinap, and Sherwin Ordonez. One of the group’s well-known moves was through the song “Do You Really Want Me” as shown during a performance by Dingdong and Arthur in 2022.
Those were the days
