There’s A Wicked Character In Everyone Of Us
Whether you feel misunderstood like Elphaba, insecure like Glinda, or want to be seen like Boq, you can all relate to any character in the film
Wicked Part 1 has been released worldwide, and reviews for the film have come out. The wait has been worth it for musical fans since the announcement it will be adapted to the big screen was announced. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have received rave reviews and the two women who originally played Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway – Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel have passed on the baton to them, even appearing in the film in cameo appearances.
But more than the spectacular design, effects, choreography, and voices, it’s the story that families can learn from. We all know it’s set before The Wizard of Oz, but in Part 1 of the film, we already see the characters’ personalities, which mirrors many of us today.
Being different and misunderstood like Elphaba
Growing up, many of us can relate to Elphaba and still relate up to now. When you’re different, you’re weird. When you speak your mind, you’re aggressive or bossy. Elphaba felt that when she entered Shiz University. She was judged by her skin color and considered a nobody. But she was not afraid to be herself. She stood up for her beliefs and paid the price for it. We were all like Elphaba and we continue to fight what we feel is right.
The insecurities masked by Glinda
Glinda was always the popular one, but she also had her insecurities. She always had her way until Madame Morrible took notice of Elphaba’s potential instead of her. Her beauty would be Fiyero’s type, but instead, Fiyero’s heart pinned for Elphaba after seeing the goodness in her. We all have our insecurities that we disguise or hide. But we need get through it and become a better version of ourselves, something Glinda will learn in her journey in the film.
Please notice me as felt by Boq
Like any kid, we were like Boq, who wanted nothing but to be noticed by his crush, Glinda. But more than the romantic feeling, Boq was always the person who was never heard or seen and cast aside. Many kids go through this, and everyone must check on one another. Being noticed is having a voice and making the person feel he or she is seen and heard.
The free-spirited and enlightenment of Fiyero
Fiyero is depicted as a free-spirited prince who always breaks the rules. Like Fiyero, we want to live what life has and enjoy it, even if it means breaking a rule or two. Admit it or not, it’s always exciting to do something different.
But free-spirited as he is, Fiyero also finds enlightenment. Like Glinda and the rest of the Shiz students, he looked at Elphaba differently. But once he saw how she was fighting for what she believed in and the goodness in her heart, he changed his perception of her. We all know that he fell in love with her in the story, but Fiyero is an example of the cliche: don’t judge a book by its cover. Let’s remind ourselves that before we even judge a person, let’s see the traits he or she has with people.
The opportunity to do and show what I can as felt by Nessarose
Nessarose is Elphaba’s sister and a person with disability. All she wants is to experience what life has to offer. But her father always treats her like a fragile person, something she feels he shouldn’t be. When she enrolls in Shiz University, she felt it was her chance until her father told Elphaba to look out for her, something she was not happy with.
Nessarose wants to show what she can do, and like her, we all want to prove ourselves to the world.
The struggle and control for power as depicted by Madame Morrible and the Wizard of Oz
Admit it or not, having power puts you on top of the food chain. But to have power, you have to use somebody, and in the case of Madame Morrible and the Wizard of Oz, it’s Elphaba. While we all are grateful for a mentor like Madame Morrible, how she showed Elphaba how to use her power will make you question her intentions. It’s also the same case for the Wizard of Oz, who doesn’t have any powers. He wants someone he can control to do his bidding.
The two characters show the importance of parental guidance to their kids. How you raise your children will depict who you are in their eyes and society.
We can all relate at some point
Part 2 of the film is scheduled for November 2025. We still have a lot to look forward too but we can agree on one thing: we can all relate to the characters at some point of our lives whether as kids or adults.
