Why Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Still Matters for Today’s Families
Roald Dahl’s beloved story comes alive on stage—reminding families why imagination, honesty, and kindness never go out of style
For many parents today, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is more than just a movie—it’s a memory. Perhaps it was first introduced by our own parents, paired with copies of Roald Dahl’s book, and filled with wide-eyed wonder at a world where chocolate rivers flowed freely, and imagination had no limits.
Decades later, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory continues to enchant new generations through films, illustrated books, and now, a spectacular stage adaptation. This July, Filipino families will once again be invited into Willy Wonka’s whimsical universe as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Broadway Musical makes its Manila debut.
Recently, the musical’s resident director, Drew Cipillone, along with lead actors Daniel Plimpton (Willy Wonka) and Cohen Toukatly (Charlie Bucket), visited Manila to share with audiences—especially families—what they can look forward to when the curtains rise.
A Visual Treat for All Ages
According to Drew, parents and kids alike can expect a fully immersive theatrical experience.
“I definitely think that they can expect spectacle—the magic, the technology that we’ve used, all the enhancements to projection and mapping, and the immersive feel for the audience,” he shared.
More than just watching a show, Drew explains that audiences are meant to feel like they’re stepping inside the story. “They can come in and be transported into the world, not just be an audience member. They can be part of the action.”
While the heart of Roald Dahl’s story remains intact, the stage version offers fresh surprises.
“If you’re in love with the original story and the original movies, there are moments of that still in this musical,” Drew said. “But there are changes in the story arcs—additional music, physical elements, and emotional layers that are different from the book and the films.”

A Story That Lets Kids Be Kids—and Adults Remember How
At its core, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory celebrates childhood in all its innocence and hopefulness. For Cohen Toukatly, who plays Charlie, being part of the production is already a dream come true.
“It’s such a blessing and such a great opportunity,” he shared, adding that traveling and performing at his age has been unforgettable. “Being able to play Charlie shows that you can still be kind, and you can still show respect, and you can still be that inner Charlie while still growing in age.”
Despite his young age, Cohen speaks thoughtfully about kindness—one of the show’s strongest themes.
“I don’t know much about anything going on in the world. But just seeing what’s going on, it’s important to remember that kindness, like building that wall of relationships and goodness, is very important,” he simply said.

Reimagining Willy Wonka
Daniel Plimpton, who steps into the iconic role of Willy Wonka, describes the experience as both an honor and a responsibility.
“I love taking on Willy Wonka every day because the people in the film are so iconic,” he said. “Willy Wonka has this sense of imagination, play, and hope for the world—especially at a time when the world doesn’t always feel kind or trustworthy.”
For Daniel, the character serves as a reminder—for adults especially—to slow down and rediscover the magic around us. “It’s a good reminder to step back and see the magic in the world and in other people.”
Music, Movement, and Pure Talent on Stage
Beyond its story and visuals, the musical delivers dynamic choreography that blends tap, modern dance, and expressive movement. Daniel, who has a background in tap dancing, lights up when talking about the show’s dance elements.
“I love tap dancing. My Willy Wonka has the essence of Danny Kaye, Donald O’Connor, Fred Astaire—their grace in movement,” he shared.
For Cohen and the rest of the young cast, the choreography becomes another way to express who their characters are. “Charlie’s buddies would just love to have you there, sharing the magic, music, and excitement,” he said.
A Sweet Takeaway for Families
When Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opens in Manila, it’s not just offering entertainment—it’s creating a shared family experience. Daniel shared how meaningful it is to know he may be introducing children to their very first musical.
“That idea could honestly bring me to tears,” he said. “It’s such an honor, and something I’ll never take for granted.”
Cohen hopes audiences carry the lessons home with them. “I hope they’re still singing the songs, talking about the show, and learning that deeper meaning—while remembering how much fun they had.”
Drew perhaps summed it up best, especially for parents listening closely.
“Yes, it’s entertainment, but there’s a moral lesson about kindness and honesty—and that those things are rewarded,” he said. “It’s educational, but wrapped in magic.”
In a world where parents are constantly teaching children how to navigate life, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory reminds us that kindness, imagination, and wonder are lessons worth repeating—at any age.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Broadway Musical opens on July 8 and runs until July 26, 2026, at The Theatre at Solaire. For tickets, visit ticketworld.com.ph.
