“Shut. Up!” Princess Diaries 3 Just Dropped An Update!

Princess Diaries 3 makes more progress as the director teases the return of familiar faces.

Over 20 years later, Genovia is officially calling its people back. The Princess Diaries 3 is actively in development, with Anne Hathaway confirming the project and director Adele Lim teasing the return of familiar faces. In an interview with Variety, the director was quoted as saying that she wanted to “do the movie right” for the many fans.

“We just want to make the story right because it is a franchise that is so beloved by so many people,” shared Lim, who noted that some of the fans from the 2001 original movie are mothers now, including herself. “There are so many movies that are wish fulfilment for princesses, we don’t have a lot of wish fulfilment movies for queens. That’s what we are setting out to do here, to show a woman in her full power.”

For many Millennial moms, The Princess Diaries was every awkward girl’s dream. Long before “glow-ups” became TikTok content, Mia Thermopolis taught an entire generation of teenagersTeenagersYoung people between 13 and 19 who are developing identity, independence, and judgment. Parents stay close by listening more than lecturing, keeping curfews and expectations clear, and showing up for that wild, untameable hair, social anxiety, clumsiness, and feeling painfully out of place did not mean you were doomed to stay invisible forever.

But fans should hold onto their tiaras carefully: there is still no official trailer, release date, or finalized production timeline yet.

What To Expect from Princess Diaries 3

The original The Princess Diaries followed Mia Thermopolis, an awkward San Francisco teen who discovers she is heir to the fictional kingdom of Genovia. Under the guidance of her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Mia slowly learns confidence, responsibility, and self-worth.

And for many awkward Filipino teenage girls who grew up in the 2000s, the franchise was comforting. Mia Thermopolis was awkward, insecure, loud in the wrong moments, invisible in others, and deeply uncertain of herself. Yet somehow, she still bloomed. Parents stay close by listening more than lecturing, keeping curfews and expectations clear, and showing up for navigating braces, bad bangs, acne, and school hallway politics, seeing the blooming process on the silver screen mattered.

Its sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, followed Mia as she prepared to become queen while navigating royal marriage laws and an unexpected romance.

Although both films were inspired by the bestselling books of Meg Cabot, longtime readers know the second movie largely abandoned the original book storyline. The 2004 sequel created an entirely different narrative instead of adapting the later novels directly.

According to recent updates, the third film will reportedly focus on a more mature Queen Mia while still retaining the warmth, humor, and emotional comfort of the originals. Director Adele Lim also hinted that fans can expect familiar faces to return and that Genovia itself will be explored more deeply.

Still, fans should be cautious online: many circulating “trailers” on YouTube are AI-generated concept videos or fan edits—not official Disney releases.

The Queen of Genovia Soon Arrives

The return of Princess Diaries arrives at an interesting time for Millennial parents—many of whom are now raising daughters navigating the same insecurities Mia once did.

Underneath the tiaras, Genovia jokes, and makeover montages was a very simple message: awkward girls are not unfinished girls. Sometimes they simply need time to grow into themselves.

Somewhere out there, countless former teenage girls who once practiced “the queen wave” in front of a mirror are now parents themselves.

And soon, Genovia may finally call them home again.
