DENR Launches The Wonderful West Philippine Sea E-Book Series for Kids!

The DENR’s new free e-book series introduces young readers to the wonders of the West Philippine Sea through the eyes of Pawi, an adventurous green sea turtle, while teaching them why protecting the Philippines’ marine environment matters.

Parents searching for educational books that spark curiosity about nature now have a new addition to story time. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has launched The Wonderful West Philippine Sea, a three-part children’s e-book series designed to introduce Filipino kids to the country’s rich marine biodiversity in a fun and age-appropriate way. The e-book series was launched last July 28, 2026.

The first title, The Wonderful West Philippine Sea with Pawi the Sea Turtle, follows Pawi, a curious green sea turtle, as young readers explore mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, colorful coral reefs, and the many marine animals that call the West Philippine Sea home.

Beyond introducing marine life, the story also highlights the everyday heroes working to protect Philippine waters, including scientists, sustainable fishers, community volunteers, and members of the Philippine Coast Guard. Through Pawi’s journey, children learn that caring for the West Philippine Sea also means protecting food security, livelihoods, biodiversity, and the country’s natural heritage for future generations.

Parents, teachers, grandparents, and storytellers can download the e-book for free and make it part of family reading time. DENR also welcomes partners interested in translating the series into local languages, publishing copies, or organizing storytelling sessions in schools and communities.

Why kids should learn about the Philippines’ marine ecosystem

Children naturally connect with stories, making books one of the most effective ways to introduce science and environmental stewardship.

The Wonderful West Philippine Sea transforms marine conservation into an exciting underwater adventure. Instead of simply memorizing facts, children discover how mangroves protect coastlines, why coral reefs support thousands of marine species, and how seagrass meadows provide shelter for sea turtles and other wildlife.

The book also encourages young readers to understand that healthy oceans directly affect Filipino families by supporting fisheries, preserving biodiversity, and helping communities thrive. These lessons nurture curiosity while inspiring children to become responsible caretakers of the environment from an early age.

The beauty of the Philippines

The Philippines is recognized as one of the world’s richest marine biodiversity hotspots, making environmental education more important than ever.

Introducing children to the country’s underwater ecosystems helps them appreciate that the Philippines’ natural treasures extend far beyond beaches and islands. Stories like Pawi’s encourage kids to value native wildlife, celebrate Filipino conservation efforts, and understand that every generation has a role in protecting the environment.

The first e-book is only the beginning. DENR has announced that two more titles in The Wonderful West Philippine Sea series will be released in August and September, giving families even more opportunities to explore the country’s seas together through storytelling.

Download the FREE e-book and begin your family’s underwater adventure with Pawi. Families and educators interested in translating, publishing, distributing the book, or organizing storytelling sessions may also contact the DENR Strategic Communication and Initiatives Service through [email protected]. Together, story time can become a meaningful lesson in environmental stewardship.
