Effective Ways to Stay Connected With Kids According to Charisse Tinio

Here are five parenting habits entrepreneur and mom Charisse Tinio practices to stay connected with her children even while balancing a demanding career.

Every parent wants open communication with their kids. While technology has bridged distances, it can’t always replace the connection that comes from physically being there. As the owner and CEO of Nice Print Photography, mompreneur Charisse Tinio knows the joy of creating meaningful moments with her three children—both as a family and through one-on-one bonding. In fact, many of her parenting tips for building a stronger connection with her kids are rooted in choosing to be present. Here are five ways Charisse stays connected with her children:

1. Making Time for One-on-One Dates With Each Child

With three children who each have different personalities and interests, Charisse avoids treating parenting as a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, she schedules individual dates that revolve around what each child genuinely enjoys.

“I think it’s important to have moments with each of your children, doing something they truly enjoy, so you can really concentrate on them and the things they like to do,” she reveals.

Her eldest, Sancho, loves discovering new restaurants, so they bond over trying different cuisines. Her daughter enjoys salon visits, shopping, and other girly activities, making mother-daughter pampering days their special tradition. Meanwhile, her middle son Vito, who is passionate about sports and jet skiing, enjoys beach trips and traveling for competitions with her and her husband.

2. Showing Up for Their Biggest Moments

Whether it’s a dance recital, sports competition, graduation, or school event, Charisse does everything she can to attend. She keeps a detailed calendar and carefully manages her schedule so family commitments remain a priority.

“If there’s a race competition, dance recital, or graduation, those will always come first,” she shares.

While work emergencies occasionally arise, she believes children notice the effort parents make to be there. When conflicts become unavoidable, she communicates honestly and ensures her husband can step in, reinforcing that their children always have a supportive parent beside them.

3. Family Trips Mean Opportunities for Meaningful Conversations

Travel has always been an opportunity to reconnect for the Tinio family. Whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or an international trip, stepping away from daily responsibilities allows everyone to slow down and enjoy uninterrupted quality time together.

Charisse also uses these family adventures to make up for periods when work requires her to travel frequently or pulls her away from them. Rather than pretending work doesn’t interfere, she openly explains why mom and dad sometimes need to be away and reassures her children that dedicated family time always follows.

“What I do is explain to them what happened. I call them and tell them that I’ll make it up to them. I tell them that after this whole season of a busy work schedule, Mom and Dad will spend time with you. We’ll go to the beach, or we’ll visit your favorite destination—let’s say Japan—so that we can have those bonding moments with all of you without the distraction of work,” Charisse shares.

That way, her children understand that work and family can coexist without making them feel less loved.

4. Getting to Know Their Friends

It may feel and sound awkward at first, but the pay-off is quite worth it. Communication is a whole lot easier when parents understand their children’s friends. Becoming familiar with their children’s social circle can strengthen trust while opening more opportunities for meaningful conversations at home.

That’s why Charisse makes an effort to know her children’s friends and even spend time with them whenever possible. By building relationships with their peers, she gains valuable insight into their kids’ interests, conversations, personalities, and even the language they use with friends. It also creates an environment where her children feel accepted instead of constantly monitored.

5. Staying Actively Involved in School Life

For Charisse, parenting doesn’t stop at the school gate. She has consistently volunteered as a parent representative and parent officer throughout her children’s school years, participating in activities such as fundraising events, Christmas parties, sports festivals, class projects, and even prom preparations.

Being involved allows her to witness important milestones firsthand while creating additional bonding opportunities with her children. More importantly, it helps her stay connected with their everyday experiences outside the home.

The Key to Effective Communication

In Charisse’s case, a commitment to her children carries just as much weight as one to her clients. Her tips show that every action and every conversation, no matter how big or small, helps build strong, open communication. Even disappointments, something many parents admit to shielding their children from, can become opportunities for connection when handled with honesty. By following through on her promises and communicating with sincerity, she teaches her children the value of trust, accountability, and integrity—something they will carry with them as they grow and build relationships with others.
