Hotel Okura Manila earns a MICHELIN Key, giving families a fresh reason to plan their next staycation minutes from NAIA

Manila has always had a soft spot for Japanese food and ritual. On September  18, the property earned One MICHELIN Key in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection, making Newport World Resorts the only integrated resort in Manila with a MICHELIN Key hotel.

Modeled after the MICHELIN Star, the honor comes from anonymous inspectors who assess a hotel’s architecture, character, service, sense of place, and overall value. One Key marks “a very special stay,” and Hotel Okura Manila earned the distinction after already appearing in the Guide’s 2025 hotel selection.

What Makes This Hotel Worth A Second Look

The 185-room hotel opened in April 2022 as the first Okura Nikko Hotels address in the Philippines. It sits just minutes from Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3, which matters more than it sounds when a trip involves early flights, layovers, or a group that would rather not spend an hour in traffic to get to bed.

Step inside and the lobby does the introducing. An atrium modeled after a Japanese village street sets the tone, built from wood and stone, with a glass pagoda-inspired reception area and a quiet rock garden nearby. Nothing about it feels like a theme-park version of Japan. It reads more like a place designed by people who understand the culture, not just the aesthetic.

Rooms Built for Actual Rest

A real bath, the kind you can’t manage at home most nights, is easy to overlook until you’re standing in one. The hotel’s Hinoki-yu Room and Hinoki-yu Premier solve for that with soaking tubs handcrafted from hinoki cypress sourced from Nagiso Town in Nagano’s Central Alps. The wood carries a natural aroma that turns a routine soak into something closer to a reset button, which counts for a lot after a full day out with the whole group.

The 11th floor is where the hotel does its best work. A health club offers jet baths, steam rooms, and saunas, while a fitness center sits on the same level for anyone determined to keep up a routine on vacation. Just beside it, The SORA Rooftop Bar overlooks the Manila skyline from an open-air terrace lined with cabanas and a rooftop pool — one crowd claims the water, another claims the loungers, and everyone ends up exactly where they wanted to be. 

Dining That Works for Every Palate

Yawaragi, the all-day dining restaurant on the fifth-floor atrium lobby, is built for exactly the kind of table negotiations that happen every night: someone wants Japanese, someone else wants something familiar, and at least one person just wants coffee that isn’t instant. The menu covers Japanese specialties, Filipino favorites, and international dishes across breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, which means nobody has to compromise to eat together.

For a quieter night out, Yamazato carries its own MICHELIN distinction and is one of three Yamazato restaurants worldwide featured in the 2026 Guide. Executive Chef Keiichiro Fujino oversees the kaiseki program, where seasonal ingredients arrive in a slow progression of courses. At the sushi counter, Specialty Chef Ikuma Sato prepares each piece to order using Edomae-style technique, while Chef Katsuji Kato runs the teppanyaki grill and a shabu-shabu table lets diners cook together, course by course, at their own pace.

Why It Fits A Staycation Near NAIA

Location does a lot of the work here. Being close to Terminal 3 cuts down on traffic time, whether that means a pre-flight dinner at Yawaragi or a last swim before checkout. Add the range of room types, the health club, and a lobby calm enough to regroup in after a long day, and the draw isn’t luxury for its own sake — it’s convenience that doesn’t ask you to give anything up.
