Heirloom Jewelry: Why the Story Matters Most

Kristine Dee’s “The Woman Within” collection shows how heirloom jewelry can carry a mother’s memories into the next generation

Heirloom jewelry becomes valuable when it carries a story from one generation to the next. That belief anchors “The Woman Within“, the newest fine jewelry collection from Filipino designer Kristine Dee. The collection explores three sides of womanhood: Modern Heirloom, Quiet Strength, and Playful Femininity. Each piece is designed to be worn now and passed down later.

Meet Kristine Dee

Dee is a jewelry designer, industrial designer, and founder of Kristine Dee, also known as K.Dee. She studied industrial design at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Scandinavian furniture design in Copenhagen. She then earned a master’s degree in industrial design from Pratt Institute in New York, where she also studied jewelry design and metalsmithing.

That training shows. Her pieces balance emotion with engineering, shaping natural gemstones, gold, and handcrafted detail with close attention to form, proportion, structure, and wearability.

Heritage: The Influence of Elizabeth Dee

Dee’s approach to legacy began with her mother, Elizabeth Dee, who collected jewelry over the years and later gave pieces to her daughters along with their stories. “It is not just the piece that she shared, but the story that comes with them,” Dee says.

One memory stands out: a piece her mother bough after closing a hard-earned business deal. For Dee, it showed that jewelry can mark independenceIndependenceA child's growing ability to do things alone, from dressing and eating to making choices and solving problems. Parents encourage it by assigning age-appropriate tasks, allowing safe mistakes, and praising, achievement, and self-worth, not only milestonesMilestonesSkills most children reach by certain ages, such as smiling, sitting, walking, speaking, and sharing. They serve as general guides rather than strict deadlines, and parents should talk to a shared with others.

That history shapes Modern Heirloom, the collection’s first chapter. It features classic gemstones and versatile details, including Ceylon sapphires, tsavorites, diamonds, multicolored sapphires, pearls, and a detachable kunzite centerpiece. The designs aim to feel timeless enough to inherit, yet current enough for everyday wear.

Craft: Why “Each Millimeter Matters”

“The Woman Within” includes 50 highlighted pieces and about 420 more in a supporting collection. Many gemstones were selected and cut for specific designs.

Dee leads her goldsmiths, stone setters, cutters, and finishers with a simple but thoughtful principle: “Each millimeter matters.” When a piece falls short of her standard, she has it redone. That lets her team see the difference and understand how small details shape the final design.

Over time, this has created what she describes as a “functional, creative choreography” among her artisans. The result is precise, architectural jewelry, especially in Quite Strength, where clean lines, proportion, and strategically places diamonds create presence without excess.

Design: Turning Emotion Into Jewelry

For Dee, a collection begins with a feeling, not a stone. Modern Heirloom started with memories of her mother and the jewelry she passed down. From there, Dee asks two questions: Could this design still be worn 20 years from now? Could it be passed on again?

Only after setting that emotional purpose does she apply her industrial design training for function, form, and proportion. A piece is complete, she says, when she feels satisfied and fulfilled. She calls it the most euphoric point in her creative process.

Playful Femininity expresses a lighter mood through movement, softness, and color. Mint tourmaline, pink spinel, aquamarine, diamonds, and a hand-carved mother-of-pearl ribbon appear in pieces designed to glow, stack, and move with the wearer.

Growth: Scaling Without Losing Intimacy

K.Dee is growing through trunk shows, its BGC showroom, and a Power Plant Mall pop-up that opens Nov.7 and runs through Jan.28, 2027. Dee is deliberate about what expands and what stays limited.

The showroom serves clients looking for ready-made pieces, made-to-order jewelry, one-of-a-kind designs, restoration, and engagement sets. The pop-up makes the brand more accessible through everyday pieces and gifts, with the same quality, integrity, and design sensibility.

Rustan’s Makati Silver Vault also carries exclusive K.Dee pieces made for its clientele. Those designs are not even available in Dee’s own inventory.

Legacy: A Bangle Made for the Future

Dee’s own future heirloom is a bangle set with the birthstones of her son, father, mother, and herself. She plans to wear it now, enjoy it, and eventually pass it to her granddaughter.

Its colorful gemstones make it feel joyful on the wrist, but its deeper value lies in the people it represents. That is the legacy Dee hopes K.Dee wearers will create: passing down not only gold and gemstones, but the memories attached to them.
