Anton Vinzon: “Kamao Is A Tribute To Papa”
During a media conference, Anton Vinzon shares how his dad serves as a foundation for his role in Kamao
GMA’s new sports drama Kamao is set to premiere on May 25 at 3:20 p.m. on GMA Afternoon Prime, and for Anton Vinzon, the project marks more than a career milestone—it is a personal tribute to his father, veteran action star Roi Vinzon. Anton, who headlines the series as Makmak, said the project feels like a dream come true and a deeply emotional turning point in his career.
“Para sa akin talaga tribute ko ito para kay Papa. Sana paglabas ng pilot, maging proud siya sa akin,” he said.

A Sports Drama Many Filipino Athletes Dream Of
In Kamao, Anton plays Makmak, a character built on grit, discipline, and the emotional bruises that come with chasing a dream. The series blends boxing with family drama and features a strong ensemble that includes Roi Vinzon, Amy Austria, Wendell Ramos, Neil Ryan Sese, and Katrina Halili, among others.
For Anton, the project also fulfilled a long-held dream of leading his own series. At the media conference, he said, “Dream come true. ‘Yung sinabi ko nga kanina, ‘Papa, natupad ko na ‘yung pangarap ko.’” He also described feeling overwhelmed by the support around him, adding, “Nakita ko sila na umiiyak at napapaiyak na rin ako pero I’m just really happy right now kasi ginawan nila ako ng proyekto, binigyang-buhay ko si Makmak.”
The role hit close to home for him. He said he hoped to hear his father tell him, “Nak, good job,” and called Roi his “superhero” and best friend. He also shared that working with his father for the first time brought pressure, but also support, describing Roi as a protective “stage father” who encouraged him to trust the directors and the process.
“Naging totoo ako sa sarili ko and mas naging matapang ako sa mga binigay niya sa ‘kin,” he said.
Anton adds that he appreciates his father not spoonfeeding him.
“Sabi niya, ‘Hindi na kita tutulungan. Dapat ‘yung mga taong tumutulong sa ‘yo, ‘yung mga direktor, dapat talaga ma-experience mo lahat.’”

Working Hand in Hand on the Same Set
What makes Kamao resonate is not just the boxing, the family tension, or the action-drama pulse. It is the emotional weight behind it: a son stepping into a role that reflects both his own ambitions and the legacy of the father who helped shape him. Anton’s tribute to Roi Vinzon gives the series its heart, and for viewers, that heart may be the reason Kamao lands like a punch and a hug at the same time.
