Arjo Atayde and Maine Mendoza’s Pamamanhikan
What exactly goes into a Pamamanhikan? Here’s what went down during Arjo Atayde and Maine Mendoza’s Pamamanhikan.
Whenever someone is about to get married, Filipino families celebrate through a Pamamanhikan. It’s an old tradition where the parents of the soon-to-be-married couple meet up and get to know each other. With Councilor Arjo Atayde and Maine Mendoza getting married soon, the Atayde and Mendoza clans met up last June 25, 2023 for an intimate dinner at home to celebrate.
What is a Pamamanhikan?
Because Filipinos place a lot of value on family ties, many traditions often emphasize on how important it is to welcome someone to the family. It also breaks the ice between in-laws who probably didn’t meet each other prior, making it easier for them to get along. After all, with their children getting married, they would be talking to each other more often. Usually, it’s customary for the husband’s family to ask for the woman’s hand in marriage.
And that’s exactly what Sylvia Sanchez and Arturo Atayde did for Arjo. By showing up at the Pamamanhikan, they proved to Maine’s parents that they love her as much as they do. Although Maine may have already shared some stories about them with her parents, it’s more comforting for them to see who will soon be Maine’s second set of parents.
The tradition celebrates the merging of two families!
In Filipino culture, a man doesn’t just marry a woman and vice versa. They marry into each other’s families, too. They learn about the different cultures and values that anchor their families. However, Pamamanhikans don’t need to be big. The important part is, as parents, we meet the family that our children marry into so we know if they’re going to be okay.
