5 Lessons Kids and Teens Can Learn from Jurassic World Dominion

What potential lessons can your kids and teens learn from a movie like Jurassic World Dominion? A lot!

If you’ve been thinking twice or thrice about going back to the cinemas to watch a movie, then Jurassic World Dominion is a must for you and your kids. Parents of the 90s will get some nostalgic moments because three of the original cast members—Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum are back. Alongside Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, fans are in for another adventure.

While the Jurassic franchise has gotten a lot of fans interested in the sciences, it hasn’t forgotten important lessons along the way. Love, teamwork, and trust are just some of them that we should continue teaching our kids and teens.

Here are some lessons you’ll see in the movie.

Warning: Spoilers ahead

The importance of trust

Trust is one of the main values tackled in the movie through several scenes. One particular scene is that of Claire (Bryce) and Maisie (Isabella Sermon), who had been clashing in the opening part of the movie. Claire and Owen (Chris Pratt) have been protecting her from hunters and scientists after her DNA. And while Maisie often feels trapped, she realized that she needs to trust the two who have become her parents and why they’ve been protective of her. Claire and Owen also realize they cannot keep her away from the world and that she needs to know things on her own.

We’ve all been there—that we ask our kids to trust us with decisions. But sometimes, they need to know things on their own and discover the world for themselves.

The importance of teamwork

The Jurassic series may have different tandems and teams. And the importance of teamwork is seen throughout Jurassic Park Dominion. All characters worked together not only to save Maisie but also a baby velociraptor—so that it can go back to its mother Blue, one of the velociraptors Owen took care of. As the saying goes, no one is left behind.

Teamwork is important in any group activity. Parents can use this moment to remind their kids to never be afraid to ask for help especially when they are unsure of what to do in a situation they are unfamiliar with.

Take those second chances

In the last two Jurassic films, we saw how Claire and Owen revived their relationship along the way. In Jurassic Park Dominion, we discover that Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) still carries feelings for Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) after being away from each other since the last time they met. Eventually, they got together and this time, it seems for keeps.

When it comes to second chances, not everyone is given that opportunity to make it right in any situation. If our kids make a mistake, they can rise again, and face what is ahead. It’s easier said than done but the second chance they’re given, they can make it count.

The roles that women play in Jurassic Park Dominion are crucial

The Jurassic franchise introduced us Dr. Ellie Sattler, a character that would inspire many young girls to know more about the sciences. In Dominion, there are three of them now who play critical roles; Sattler, Claire, and Kayla (DeWanda Wise), who not only provide strength and support to the male characters but also solutions that could help them out of situations.

Gone are the days when women are set aside and mocked for their ambition. There is still a lot of educating to be done when it comes to women’s rights. But characters like Sattler, Kayla, and Claire, could inspire young girls to reach their dreams.

The family will always be important no matter what

Jurassic Park Dominion may be an adventure filled with dinosaurs and non-stop action. But it also teaches the importance of family. In Dominion, we see Maisie kidnapped alongside a baby velociraptor and Owen promised Blue he will bring it back.

Kids and teens have different concepts of a family. It may be a family composed of a mother, father, and siblings including the extended family. Or people who raised them like their grandparents, uncles, aunts, or even friends. Regardless of who raised a child, the meaning of family is important and that’s what is seen in Claire, Owen, and Maisie.
