Why Some Classes are Suspended Due to Extreme Heat

With summer fast approaching, the Department of Education says school heads can suspend classes due to extreme heat if needed.

Temperatures are rising as summer is fast approaching. But with classes still ongoing, it might cause heat stroke, thus the decision of some schools to suspend classes.

In an interview with GMA News, the Department of Education said that school heads have the prerogative to suspend classes if the heat is unbearable to prevent students from heat stroke and fainting.

Merong authority ang ating mga school heads at school superintendents na suspindihin ang ating face-to-face classes kung sakaling nakakaranas ng matinding init sa paaralan,” DepEd Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas said.

Why the suspensions?

Bringas also said that they’ve permitted schools for students not to be in uniforms for their comfort in case of the extreme heat.

Bringas also pointed out that in case of suspension, school managers and authorities may conduct make-up classes to catch up. “Since they are the school managers, meron silang ganoong authority na naibigay sa kanila at ine-expect natin that they will exercise very wise discretion when it comes to suspension of classes, including ‘yung pagbibigay ng mga intervention activities for lost hours,” he added.

The discussion on suspension of classes due to extreme came about as some schools in Bacolod City and the Negros region suspended face-to-face classes due to anticipation of the 41 Celsius heat index.

The country has been experiencing El Niño for months now and PAGASA said that this will likely persist until April, which is the peak of summer. As a reminder to students out there—don’t forget to bring water, comfortable clothes, and pack on some protection from the sun.
