Disney’s Live-Action Moana Sets Sail With Stunning First Teaser
Catherine Lagaʻaia stars as Moana alongside Dwayne Johnson as Maui
Moana is officially coming to life on the big screen. Disney has released the first teaser for its live-action adaptation of Moana, set to premiere in U.S. theaters on July 10, 2026.
The film stars newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia as Moana, with Dwayne Johnson reprising his iconic role as the demigod Maui—this time in live action.
Inside the Teaser
In the nearly one-minute clip, Moana once again hears the call of the ocean. The teaser shows her setting sail beyond the reef of her island home, Motunui, where she joins forces with the larger-than-life Maui for another unforgettable adventure.
The live-action adaptation is directed by Thomas Kail, best known for directing the smash-hit musical Hamilton. The film is produced by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Auliʻi Cravalho, the original voice of Moana in Moana and Moana 2, serves as an executive producer—helping guide the story’s authenticity as it transitions from animation to live action.
Johnson also offered fans a first look by revealing the movie’s poster across his social media platforms.

Behind the Scenes
Since the release of the animated films, plans for a live-action adaptation have been discussed. In 2024, Johnson spoke about the experience of stepping into Maui’s physical form for the first time.
“I have a handle on who Maui is: I know the voice, I know the man, I know his inspiration,” he told Extra. “The moment I stepped on set as live-action Maui, I realized right away, ‘Oh, wow. This is different… this is real flesh and blood.’ It becomes real all of a sudden. It’s almost like getting into my grandfather’s skin.”
