Why a Healthy Thyroid Can Help in Pregnancy

The thyroid gland plays a big factor during a woman’s pregnancy. Here’s why it’s important to be aware.

For pregnant women, the importance of health is highlighted even more now that they carry a baby in their wombs. But did you know that a healthy thyroid is also important during the nine-month journey?

The thyroid, which is a butterfly-shaped gland found at the base of the neck, is often neglected. “It plays a major role in the growth and development of our body and how well our body metabolizes or processes what we eat and drink into energy depends on thyroid hormones,” said Dr. Maria Theresa T. Lopez, who is an Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist from the Makati Medical City.

“With an abnormal thyroid function, your baby could have low birth weight problems and affect the development of the brain and nervous system,” she explained.

How to detect a thyroid problem

One of the common conditions the thyroid gland goes through is goiter which usually slows down or increases the heart rate. Dr. Lopez said that this condition could also either make a person gain or lose weight too quickly.

Dr. Lopez said that a check-up must be done immediately. “A physical exam and blood tests to check the levels of your thyroid hormones will confirm if you have hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.”

Moreover, medication is very important so it’s best to go to your endocrinologist and have a consultation so that you will have a healthy thyroid that can help in your pregnancy.

“Let your doctor know if you’re taking medicine for a preexisting thyroid condition. And don’t hesitate to tell your health practitioner if you suspect you could have a thyroid issue. Once your thyroid function is under control, you can have a smooth pregnancy journey,” Dr. Lopez said.
