Did You Know That Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Can Affect a Mom’s Eyesight?
The hormonal changes brought about by pregnancy and breastfeeding can actually affect a mother’s eyesight.
During a conversation with a group of first-time moms, the topic of eyesight came up as one mother in her 30s, who underwent LASIK surgery in her 20s, noticed that her eyes had blurred. And after visiting her ophthalmologist, her suspicions were confirmed. Her grade had gone up again. According to ophthalmologists, pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect a mother’s eyesight.
Temporary eye concerns are common when pregnant or breastfeeding
Many mothers who are either expecting or breastfeeding can experience vision problems. Most of the time, these are temporary. Your vision could be reacting to hormonal changes and other physical effects of pregnancy, giving birth, and lactation. Moreover, the fluid buildup that also causes swollen ankles and fingers (otherwise known as manas) can affect the lens and cornea of your eyes.
When to see an eye doctor
If your vision is bothering you or affecting your daily life, it might be time to see an eye doctor. He or she will most likely conduct a non-dilated exam. Most eye doctors agree that refractive error can be variable throughout pregnancy and lactation. So final prescription should be determined following your first menstrual cycle after you stop breastfeeding. If you’re having a hard time reading, watching TV, or even driving, your doctor might ask you to wear prescription glasses as needed. However, if you didn’t wear glasses before pregnancy and nursing, you likely won’t need them after.
