Juana Manahan-Yupangco: Just for the Health of It

Mesa ni Misis Founder Juana Manahan-Yupangco highlights the importance of healthy eating and creating a foundation for a lifetime of wellness.

This story about Juana Manahan-Yupangco first came out in Modern Parenting’s special Mother’s Day-Father’s Day 2023 Print Edition available on https://sarisari.shopping/.

When Juana Manahan’s husband Rick had a spike in his cholesterol, she encouraged her whole family, her two children included, to transition to a plant-based diet. For many, the change in lifestyle may be a little overwhelming or even daunting. But it was a gradual process with small changes being introduced over time.

Managing picky eaters

This approach was helpful, especially since children have a tendency to be picky eaters or resistant to try new foods. But by involving her children Jaime and Rosanna in the process, she got them interested in healthier eating. Her no-fail recipes for kids, which include Monggo Bolognese, also showcase the effectiveness of hiding veggies in sauces and dishes.

“You can hide pretty much any veggie in the sauce! Children are actually easier to teach than adults. If they don’t know what they are missing, they won’t miss it! There is no reason to give kids junk food or fast food at a young age, but if you already have, it’s not that hard to get them off it.”

Starting Slowly and Eating More Greens

For busy parents who resort to ordering online or taking out fast food, Juana encourages them to choose healthier restaurants to order from. “Choose items that are boiled or grilled or in a soup rather than fried or covered in sauce. That’s where they hide the MSG and fat!”

She also recognizes that not all families have the same resources and budget to make the shift to a healthier lifestyle. Her advice to start slowly and listen to one’s body is especially important in these situations. Even small changes, such as adding more vegetables to meals or choosing healthier snacks, can make a difference.

This refreshing and practical perspective on healthy eating and involving her children in the process is a big step towards a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. In addition, it’s an investment in her whole family’s well-being.
