King of Kings: A Splendid Retelling of Stories From The Bible

Voiced by the biggest names in Hollywood, King of Kings narrates the stories of Jesus from his birth to his resurrection from the grave

One of the movies shown during Holy Week over the weekend was King of Kings. The animated film was voiced by big names in Hollywood: Uma Thurman, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Hamill, Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan, Forest Whitaker, and Oscar Isaac. Yet beyond the star-studded cast, it’s the emotional heart of the film—the story of a father and son—that truly resonates.

A Son’s Imagination

In the movie, we see Charles Dickens (voiced by Branagh) narrating during a recital of one of his classics: A Christmas Carol. The show is interrupted several times because of his son, Walter, and his cat, who are reimagining King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Frustrated by his son’s antics, Charles scolds Walter, with his son turning his back.

When Charles gets home, he finds Walter still upset with him. His wife Catherine urges him to tell Walter a story after checking the front page of the manuscript torn by mistake. Charles then asks his son if he wants to hear a story of a king, which piques Walter’s interest. Walter then asks if it’s about kings and dragons, and Charles answers that the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is based on the story of a king – Jesus Christ.

Charles proceeds to tell the story of Jesus – from his birth in Bethlehem, how his parents, Mary and Joseph, fled Egypt for his protection until he was crucified on the cross and rose from the dead. Throughout the film, Walter and Charles are transferred visually into the storyline, including a scene when Walter’s beloved feline almost gets lost and is picked up by Jesus.

The story inspired Walter, so he ran to his siblings and started sharing the story with them.

Why King of Kings Is Worth Watching

King of Kings is not just an animated movie retelling the stories of Jesus. It’s a film that kids can easily digest and understand the importance of faith, hope, and love. It also tells the story of family, why Jesus is grateful to Mary and Joseph, and the importance of the connection between a parent and a child, in the case of Charles and Walter.

King of Kings is also worth watching because it reminds viewers of the sacrifices Jesus made and reflects on the importance of faith. There are times when you just want to give up, but knowing what Jesus went through pushes you to be better.

Overall, King of Kings joins the ranks of films and shows like Super Book and Flying House that can help in teaching Christian stories to young kids. It’s worth watching, and it will pique your kid’s interest in the stories from the Bible.
