Last week, President Rodrigo Duterte announced that commuters will enjoy riding the MRT-3 for free for a month. The announcement was made during the ceremony of the MRT-3 Rehabilitation Project last March 22.

“I’d like to announce, (Transportation) Secretary Art Tugade and I, we decided that the MRT-3 rides will be free from March 28 to April 30, 2022,” Duterte said. Incidentally, Duterte is celebrating his birthday on March 28.

The MRT-3 Rehabilitation Project is a joint project between the Philippine government and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency. Duterte personally thanked the Japanese representatives present at the event.

From the previous 12 to 15 trains running, there are now 18 to 22 trains. With these upgrades, the president said that this will help commuters get to their destinations faster.

“I want to take this opportunity to promote the rehabilitated MRT-3 to the commuting public and assure our kababayans that the service disruptions are a thing in the past,” he said.

Parents and kids can take advantage of these free rides to visit their favorite places around Metro Manila. Of course, it’s still important to practice safety protocols. So be sure to wear your masks at all times and wash your hands frequently!
