Remembering Flora Gasser: The “Yaya” of Philippine Telenovela
The late veteran actress Flora Gasser passed away at 89 years old.
Confirmed by her granddaughter, Valerie Ocampo, the late veteran actress Flora Gasser recently passed away at 89 years old. The granddaughter posted on her Facebook 2 days ago: “Our Lola, Flora Gasser, passed away yesterday and is now with the Lord and with our Lolo Harry.” The family, however, did not disclose her cause of death.
The Yaya of Philippine Telenovela
The late veteran actress Flora Gasser played a variety of roles from Batang Z in 1996, Joey Boy Munti: 15 anyos ka sa Muntinglupa in 1991 and, Kumander Bawang in 1988. But, many people would remember her more for her role as the caring “yaya” or “kasambahay” in Philippine telenovela. She also sometimes played the comedic relief, adding much-needed humor amidst the drama.
She also came out in a 15-minute film called “Nene” in 2020, playing the titular character. The movie reflects on the reunion of mother and daughter, showing how the reunion is nothing of the sort seen in Hollywood. Rather, it is a simple bus ride with a variety of mundane conversations that make the story special.
She was married to the late veteran news anchor of RPN9’s NewsWatch, Harry Gasser, who passed away on April 3, 2014.
She also played herself in Wagas, a film about Harry Gasser’s and her love story.

Her role often as the caring “yaya” and “kasambahay” brought about many happy memories for those who fondly remember the yayas and kasambahays who looked after them as children. Although, to her family, she was a loving Lola alongside Lolo Harry. Thank you, Lola Flora, for your work in Philippine telenovela, and may the country never forget it.
