Remembering Matthew Perry in Death: How He Taught Us How to Laugh

As late actor Matthew Perry finds his resting place, it is in death we remember all the moments he made us laugh.

Although the late actor Matthew Perry had many roles, his most prominent and memorable one was that of the witty and sarcastic Chandler Bing from Friends. But this humor still fit his other roles. Especially when he took more father-like ones like Ron Clark in the biographic movie The Ron Clark Story and Mike O’Donnell from 17 Again. Those roles may not have been as big as Chandler. But they still landed him a cemetery spot near two iconic figures: Carrie Fisher and Paul Walker.

Remembering the laughter he shared

Every time we come across stressful times, there is always a line from Matthew Perry that we could retort with to make the situation funnier. His comedic timing and wit made us feel that Life’s challenges weren’t as bad as they appeared. But like most comedians, his comedic style and delivery was an art. Like many artists, he suffered for his art. From dealing with his many demons like drugs, drinking, and more, it was almost unreal to hear that someone who could spread so much laughter and cheer was fighting those kinds of battles.

But his loss, around a week or two after he posted a picture of him with his father, was one that broke many people’s hearts. Including those of his cast mates from FRIENDS.

“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates: we are a family,” said Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer who issued a joint statement. “There is so much to say. But right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”

Respecting the peace he wanted

While laid to rest in one of the most celebrity-packed cemeteries, his funeral session remained a private one. Attended only by friends and family, it was one that recalled the many battles against substance abuse and the painful memories he faced with humor. Although his grave had no flowers as it was allegedly the family’s request, some fans have found ways to pay tribute elsewhere. Bouquets lay on lamp posts, some even left flowers on his doorstep at his home in the Pacific Palisades. Some even paid a written tribute to the actor’s character, Chandler.

While the world mourns his death and loss of a great comedian, we pray that Matthew Perry finally found the peace he is looking for.
