Shifting College Courses is Not A Sign of Defeat

Many parents consider shifting college courses a “sign of defeat”. Here’s why it’s not.

College is one of the most important moments in any kid’s life as they progress from young teens to adults. But as they grow in college, some kids might find themselves wanting to shift from their college course. It’s not a decision that they made overnight. Sometimes, they spend hours vacillating over it because they’re waiting for the explosion to happen when they tell their parents that they don’t want their original course anymore.

1. It’s nice to have variety in the family.

Some families take pride in being a family full of lawyers, doctors, engineers, and more. But it’s also more fun to learn about the other aspects of different industries.

2. Everyone has their affinities.

Being good in Math unfortunately has been the ultimate criterion for most families to check if their kids are smart or not. But not everyone is good with numbers. Others are better at weaving words. How does one explain the numbers if they can’t explain them properly? That’s why Creative Writing is also a college course.

3. Better to shift than to get kicked out.

A lot of college kids would rather shift away from a college course rather than be left unhappy with a skill set they hate. But it’s not a form of defeat. Rather, it’s a mold of identity. Forcing a kid to stay in a college course they don’t like makes them more prone to getting kicked out than staying.

4. The college course they got into wasn’t even their main choice.

Each university has its quota courses and applicants have what they call their backup or alternative course. Also known as the course that just gets them into the college. Quota courses need applicants to score more than 75% than the rest of the population and it can be hard to get in. Besides, it’s better they shift as early as the first year to get a course that’s more custom-tailored to their future job preference.

5. Some kids stick to their college courses due to filial pressure.

In more traditional families, kids often just go with whatever course their parents or families dictate for them because they’re too scared to choose. Some opt for the minors route while others opt for the double major. However, some aren’t comfortable dealing with a minor or having a double major so they go for a shift instead.

6. They have their own version of the future.

College kids are more wired than their predecessors nowadays and their choices are more informed than many think. Back then, programmers didn’t have much of a future but nowadays, they can make good money. These people are the reason why everyone stayed connected and started small businesses during the pandemic.

Shifting from a college course isn’t always about their inability to handle the pressure and weight. Sometimes, they just don’t see themselves doing it anymore. However, there’s a lot of processing and talking that needs to be done to make sure that the shift isn’t just an impulsive decision.
