News of Shrek 5 came into light after Eddie Murphy dropped hints that he has started recording as Donkey for the project.
“We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” he said during an interview posted on Collider.

Shrek was first shown back in 2001 and has since produced four more films – Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After.
The franchise has also produced a spin-off in Puss in Boots, starring Antonio Banderas. In 2022, Puss In Boots made a return with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
