The Sandbox Collective Brings Spring Awakening Back in 2027

The Sandbox Collective is bringing back the acclaimed musical in 2027, giving parents and teens another chance to watch a story about adolescence, communication, and the consequences of staying silent.

For those who missed Spring Awakening during its run in early 2026, there’s another chance to experience the musical.

The Sandbox Collective has announced that it will stage a rerun of Spring Awakening as its opening production for 2027.

The production is scheduled for February 2027 at The Black Box at The Proscenium Theater in Rockwell Center, Makati City. Details about ticket selling are expected to be announced soon.

But beyond its music and powerful performances, Spring Awakening remains a story that can spark important conversations—especially between parents and their teenagers.

What is Spring Awakening about?

Based on Frank Wedekind’s controversial play of the same name, Spring Awakening is set in 1890s Germany and follows a group of teenagers navigating adolescence in a society where difficult questions are often met with silence.

The musical explores experiences and issues many young people continue to face today, including sex, identity, mental health, pressure, anxiety, and failure. It also looks at the challenges women face when they find themselves vulnerable, as well as the journey of understanding one’s queer identity.

While the setting may be more than a century ago, many of its conversations still feel relevant today.

For parents, some of these topics can be uncomfortable to bring up. Conversations about sex, pregnancy, identity, and mental health are not always easy, particularly in Filipino families where certain subjects may still feel taboo.

But as the musical reminds us, avoiding a conversation doesn’t mean the questions disappear.

Back in January, The Sandbox Collective Artistic Director Sab Gregorio, who is also a parent, emphasized the importance of open communication between parents and their children.

“Innocence does not mean ignorance,” she said. “This is what can happen if you don’t have open discussions with your children.”

It’s a message that remains at the heart of Spring Awakening: young people will continue to have questions, experiences, fears, and struggles. The question is whether they feel safe enough to bring them to the adults they trust.

Why Parents and Teens Should Watch

Spring Awakening may not always be an easy watch, but perhaps that’s precisely why it can be a meaningful one for parents and older teens.

Its themes are still very much applicable today. Even with more conversations around mental health and greater access to information, many families still struggle to openly discuss topics such as sex, pregnancy, identity, and emotional well-being.

The musical shows what can happen when there is a gap between parents and their children—when young people are expected to figure things out on their own because asking questions feels shameful or unsafe.

Of course, watching a musical won’t automatically make these conversations easier. But it can be a starting point.

Sometimes, a story gives families the words they struggle to find themselves. A scene can lead to a question. A character’s experience can open a discussion. And a difficult topic may feel a little less intimidating when you’re talking about what happened onstage before talking about what your own child may be going through.

More than a story about teenage rebellion or growing up, Spring Awakening is a reminder of the importance of listening.

Parents don’t need to have all the answers. But being present, keeping the lines of communication open, and letting children know that they can ask difficult questions without fear can make a difference.

And sometimes, all it takes is one moment to sit down and talk.
