Atasha Muhlach Leads New Generation Cast of Bongga Ka Day

The actress takes on the iconic role of Annie Batungbakal in the musical set to open this September

A new generation is set to discover one of Filipino pop culture’s most beloved characters.

Rising actress Atasha Muhlach will lead the cast of Bongga Ka Day: The Annie Batungbakal Musical, stepping into the role made famous by the late National Artist Nora Aunor in the 1979 film Annie Batungbakal.

Atasha was formally introduced as Annie during a media conference streamed on the Viva Artists Agency Facebook page on Tuesday, June 17. She takes on the role of a young woman whose dreams, determination, and search for belonging continue to resonate decades after the story first captivated audiences.

Described as “creative, spirited, generous, and lovable,” Annie works as a saleslady at House of Pasion while aspiring to become a fashion designer. Eager to join the glamorous Coco Banana crowd, she soon learns that authenticity—not popularity—is the key to finding her place in the world.

Meet the Rest of the Cast

Newport World Resorts also unveiled the rest of the cast through a social media announcement. The ensemble includes John “Sweet” Lapus, Jackie Lou Blanco, Yani Lopez, and Ring Antonio.

The musical draws inspiration from the 1979 film starring Nora Aunor, which followed Annie, an ordinary saleslady who finds joy, confidence, and self-expression through disco dancing after long days of work. While set in a different era, Annie’s story remains relatable today—a reminder that pursuing passions and embracing individuality can help people navigate life’s challenges.

Younger audiences may also recognize the story from the 2004 film Annie B., headlined by Jolina Magdangal, proving that Annie’s journey continues to connect with different generations.

Adding to the nostalgia is the music of Hotdog, whose iconic hits—including “Manila.” “Annie Batungbakal,” “Bongga Ka Day,” and “Ikaw Ang Miss Universe ng Buhay Ko”—helped define the Manila Sound era and remain staples in many Filipino households.

A Musical That Bridges Generations

Much like Bagets: The Musical introduced younger audiences to the youth culture of the 1980s, Bongga Ka Day offers families a chance to revisit the vibrant world of the 1970s.

From disco music and colorful fashion to the unmistakable charm of Manila Sound, the production serves as both entertainment and a cultural time capsule.

For parents, the musical may bring back memories of songs, stories, and personalities that shaped their own childhoods. For younger viewers, it provides a glimpse into the world their parents and grandparents grew up in.

More importantly, it creates an opportunity for families to experience those stories together. In an age when entertainment is often consumed individually, productions like Bongga Ka Day offer a rare chance for shared conversations across generations—where parents can reminisce, children can discover something new, and everyone can leave the theater humming the same songs.
