Tim Curry Dies at 80: The Actor Who Entertained Generations

The British actor, sidelined from performing for over a decade after a major stroke, leaves behind a career that shaped both midnight-movie culture and Saturday morning cartoons

Tim Curry, the chameleon English actor who slid effortlessly between horror, Broadway, and children’s animation, died Tuesday night, August 25 at his home in Los Angeles, according to multiple entertainment outlets. He was 80.

A specific cause has not been released. Curry has lived with serious health complications since a stroke in 2012 that left him using a wheelchair.

A career built on transformation

Curry made his name in the 1970s, corseted and fishnetted as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the mad scientist at the center of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The film flopped on its initial release, then found a second life as a midnight-screening ritual that turned Curry into a cult icon. He carried that same appetite for reinvention into Clue (1985) Legend (1985), and Stephen King’s It (1990), where he played Pennywise the clown, and onto Broadway, where he originated Mozart in Amadeus and won a Tony in 1980. Later nominations followed for My Favorite Year (1999) and Spamalot (2005).

The voice the bridges two generations of kids

For as many people who know Curry from midnight screenings, just as many know him purely by voice. The roles below are only a few of his many voice-over, cartoon, and video game credits. He spent years as Nigel Thornberry, the endlessly enthusiastic naturalist on Nickelodeon’s The Wild Thornberrys (1998–2004), a role that lodged “smashing” into a generation’s vocabulary.

He won a Daytime Emmy for voicing Captain Hook in Peter Pan & the Pirates (1990–1991), played the villainous Hexxus in FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992) and voiced Forte in Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (1997).

He later lent his voice to Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2012–2014) as Chancellor Palpatine/Darth Sidious, and his early recordings as the Joker for Batman: The Animated Series (1992) were ultimately replaced before the show aired. 

A quiet final chapter

Born Timothy James Curry on April 19,1946, in Grappenhall, England, he sang in a church choir before turning to acting, making his West End debut as Woof in Hair in 1968. After his stroke, he mostly withdrew from public life, shifting to occasional voice work and appearances. His last on-screen appearance came in Fox’s 2016 Rocky Horror remake, playing the Criminologist narrator.

Tributes poured in, including from The Muppets, who worked with him in the movie Muppet Treasure Island.
