ICYMI: Students Now Get 50% Off on LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 Rides
The 50% discount for students is a directive from President Bongbong Marcos, launched just as the school year begins
As students return to campus and parents stretch their budget for baon and daily commuting, every peso saved counts. One of the most common ways students get to school is by train, and to help ease the load, the Department of Transportation has increased the student fare discount to 50% for LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3.

A Sigh of Relief for Commuting Families
“Malaking tulong ito sa mga pamilya lalo na sa mga magulang na hirap magpaaral sa kanilang mga anak. ‘Yung matitipid nila, pwede nilang ilaan sa ibang gastusin gaya ng mga project, dagdag sa baon, o iba pang pangangailangan sa school,” Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said.
The increased discount is especially helpful for those commuting to the University Belt via LRT-2.
“Mabuti na ito—at least diretsong tulong ito sa bulsa ng mga estudyante at ng pamilya nila,” Dizon added.
How to Avail the Discount
Students who wish to apply for the discount will have to use the single journey cards first. The DOTR has yet to release the guidelines for those using the beep cards.
For instructions to avail, the DOTR released a step-by-step process.
The discount is valid every day, weekends, and holidays. The discount lasts until 2028 for students, including those taking postgraduate studies.
Why It Matters for Parents
For many families, commuting costs range from ₱100 to ₱200 a day. Halving that means more room in the budget for meals, projects, and other school expenses.
Whether you’re a student or the parent of one, this discount offers more than savings—it’s one less thing to worry about in the daily juggle of school and home life.
