Wayne Hwang: Analytical Thinking As Needle And Thread For Fatherhood

Even with a full-time job in the tech industry, dad of two Wayne Hwang has a different love language: baking and styling for his family

Many say that baking and sewing are more for moms and daughters to bond over. But not Wayne Hwang! The dad of two (one boy, one girl), although graduating with a pre-med course and managing a full-time tech career, spends his fatherhood in a way that can get moms and daughters green with envy: fashion and baking. Who wouldn’t want a husband and dad who makes fabulous dresses for both mom and daughter? His son’s not left out either; he has a few princely outfit sets from his dad, too!

Love in every seam

All it takes is one quick look at his Instagram, and any parent can tell what his theme usually is: movies and Disney. While most kids go to Disneyland or movie-themed stores to enjoy the magic, his kids live the dream from their own kitchen. In one of his many Instagram posts, most of his creations are sewn on their dining table, which doubles as his sewing table, and the photoshoot is done in their living room.

While he admits never going to fashion school, Wayne reveals that he learned sewing from his mother. “I was six years old when I asked my mom to teach me how to sew. She then gave me scrap fabric to make a quilt. I learned how to thread a needle, cut squares, and sew everything together,” he laughs in an Instagram story.

His daughter has been getting into the hobby too. She even sewed her own dress!

Even though his creations take roughly 20-40 hours to complete, he credits three generations of strong Taiwanese women in his life for encouraging his creativity and his dad for his resilience. “As a mechanical engineer and inventor,” Wayne shares. “My dad encouraged me to never be intimidated by challenges. Like raising my kids!”

He hopes to “pass the skills he’s learned” to his kids, like riding a bike, daily math skills, hair styling, dressing for success, financial management, navigating office politics, and supporting strong women. And his father is just as involved with the grandkids, letting them play with the little wooden train set that Wayne himself once played with. “He’d set out random pieces and challenged me to expand the train set,” he recalls. “I kept the old set and even expanded it with new pieces for my kids to play with.”

He adds, “With analytical thinking, anything is possible!”

Celebrating Fatherhood with a Message

While most dads bond with their kids over cars and office work, Wayne Hwang’s dabbling in costume-making and styling proves that there are just too many ways to bond with the kids. His content also proves that most things in life are interdisciplinary; things like math and science do have a way of returning to the arts and the human experience.

As Father’s Month comes to a close, he sends a message of encouragement to the many supportive dads, granddads, uncles, and mentors. “Happy Father’s Day. You’re building us a better world.”
