What Is Sora AI? Why Parents Should Take Note?

Meet the new AI that people are relying on to make more videos: Sora!

In late 2024, OpenAI introduced Sora AI, a model that can generate short videos from simple text, images, or existing clips. Recently (late September 2025), it released Sora 2, a newer version with better visuals and smoother audio-video synchronicity.

While people use it to make cameos, others have used Sora to create a lot of fan-based content and memes. As it gains popularity, especially in the U.S. and Canada first, families and creators are discussing both its creative promise and risks.

In the Philippines, where short videos, reels, and social content are staples in family life, knowing how Sora works and how to spot its output becomes part of safe digital literacy.

How Sora AI Works (in Simple Terms)

  • Text, image, or video prompt → AI video
You enter a short sentence or upload an image/video. Sora then creates a new short video that matches your description.
  • Cameo/likeness control
Users can opt to “record” a short reference of their face/voice to allow Sora to insert them into generated scenes.
  • Automatic watermarking & metadata
To help show that a video was AI-generated, Sora adds watermarks or tags (metadata) so that viewers or platforms can tell.
  • Short clips only
Sora is currently designed for relatively short videos (seconds, not long films).

What Filipino Families Should Be Alert To With Sora 2

Considering how realistic Sora 2 can be, it’s easier nowadays to release impersonations or scams. The term was known long ago as “deepfake” or “deepfaking.” Many sexual predators have used it to make money from unsuspecting children and moms.

Others include the following:

  • Copyright & likeness rights
By default, Sora may include copyrighted content unless creators opt out. Big studios and creators (like Hollywood) are already pushing back, saying AI tools like Sora risk infringing on their rights.
  • Bias & representation
AI tends to replicate biases—gender roles, racial representation, ableism—and Sora is not exempt. This is also dependent on the prompt the user sends, which like any AI, only analyzes based on surface value. Not the contextual meaning of words.
  • Overtrusting what you see
Not everyone is capable of instinctively seeing the difference. Sometimes, it takes years in tech to finally see the difference between reality and digital.

How Parents Can Use Sora Responsibly (or Decide Not To)

Encourage skepticism

The foundation of critical thinking is skepticism. With the internet churning out all sorts of content and “brain rot,” encouraging kids to be skeptical teaches them how to be responsible in using Sora. The four “w’s” are the best place to start: who, what, when, and why?

Use it transparently

If creating something with Sora, always label it clearly (“AI-generated”) so viewers know.

Control likeness sharing

Only give permission (cameo rights) to “trusted” apps or platforms. Be careful with who can use your face or voice. Make sure there’s a legal paper that protects your identity.

Set content boundaries at home

Decide together what kind of AI content is allowed (fun, harmless) and what’s off-limits (violent, impersonation).

Verify before sharing

If a video looks shocking or unbelievable, check fact-check sites, official news outlets, or reverse image/video tools before forwarding.

Why This Matters for Parents & Kids in the Philippines

Everybody loves reels in the Philippines. They’re bite-sized, fun, and educational when done right. In 15 seconds, anyone can learn something new. Besides, it also passes the time while traffic consumes our sanity.

Unfortunately, this is also how AI videos slip in unnoticed. Especially when the prompt is written right, it’s hard to distinguish what’s true or not. Gamers usually know because they’ve witnessed video games grow over the years—from graphics, dialogue writing, and even animation.

With elections, social issues, and viral videos being part of daily news, AI-generated content could sway opinions or spread false narratives. So, always be vigilant when watching videos. Like a wise mom once said, “Zero trust policy.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Sora AI is OpenAI’s flagship product for creating and editing videos. However, some users still say there are errors and quality issues that more experienced human video editors can detect and fix.

Not ideally — it tries to require cameo permissions. But some users have found ways to remove watermarks or avoid getting flagged. It’s why consent and privacy are a big concern now.

Clunky movements, mismatched audio, and garbled or warped voices — these are usually the obvious signs.

However, for more experienced creators, they can easily clean that out. Smaller details like clunky or forced frame shifts, like when one scene transitions to another, can be a sign. If it flows too smoothly, chances are—it’s AI.

Depends on the age, but as the parent, always remind them that AI is only a tool meant to assist. Not to completely create. It’s still a must to learn the basics of video editing and creation.

Yes, they can. Usually, there’s a drafted contract and OpenAI has already begun programming the limitations into the Sora AI.
