Michael de Mesa Pens a Message for His Late Sister Cherie Gil

Michael de Mesa, the last of the second generation of the Eigenmanns, remembers his sister Cherie, who died last August 5 after battling cancer.

Actor Michael de Mesa posted a short message for his sister, actress Cherie Gil who died on August 5 after battling cancer in the United States. The message was accompanied by a photo of him with his sister’s remains in an urn.

“I know you were with us — smiling, crying, and laughing at the beautiful memories we shared of you with each other. We miss you so much! But in our grief, we smile knowing that you are hugging Ralph again. We love you, Cherie!” Michael wrote. Ralph is actor Mark Gil, who died in 2014.

Aside from a photo of him and Cherie’s remains, Michael also shared a photo of the Eigenmann clan. It includes his sons Ryan and Geoff Eigenmann and their families. Moreover, spotted in the picture were Cherie’s kids and Mark’s kids such as Andi Eigenmann, Gabby Eigenmann, Sid Lucero, and Max Eigenmann.

Since her passing in August, the Philippine Entertainment Industry has continued to honor Cherie. Many of her movies were recently uploaded for free online by some of the country’s top film productions.

The youngest child of Eddie Mesa and Rosemarie Gil, Cherie was discovered by Vic del Rosario of Viva Films. She later launched her single “I Love You, Boy” released in 1977.

Cherie ventured into films soon after. One of her first movies was Problem Child, which she mentioned was a life-changing film. She did Manila By Night as well — directed by Ishmael Bernal. Additionally, she did a sitcom, Champoy, and later took part in one of Peque Gallaga’s most popular films — Oro, Plata, Mata.

She is known for being one of the country’s top contravidas with her role as Lavinia Arguelles in Bituin Walang Ningning cementing her status in Philippine Pop Culture with the famous line, “You are nothing but a second-rate trying hard copycat.”

Cherie has three children. She has a son, Jay, from her relationship with actor Leo Martinez and two children with husband Rony Rogoff – Bianca and Raphael.
