Liza Diño’s Father Dies After Battling Cancer
In a statement, actress Liza Diño confirmed that her father, former DILG undersecretary Martin Diño, died early morning of August 8.
Actress and former Film Development of the Philippines (FDCP) chairperson Liza Diño-Seguerra confirmed on Wednesday, August 8, that her father, former Interior and Local Government undersecretary Martin Diño, died after battling cancer.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Martin Diño. Former Undersecretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG),” Liza wrote on her Facebook. “‘Bobot,’ as he is fondly called, peacefully died at 2:15 am on August 8, 2023, surrounded by his family. He suffered from acute respiratory failure and has been battling with stage IV lung cancer for more than a year. He was 66.”
“Martin Diño was not only a dedicated public servant but also a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. His unwavering commitment to his responsibilities, his tireless work ethic, and his passion for service defined his life’s journey. His contributions to our nation’s progress, particularly on local governance and barangay development, will forever stand as a testament to his commitment to a better society.”
Before confirming his passing, Liza shared a short letter for her dad.
“My dear Papa, You fought until the end; we all did. And you were surrounded by prayers of countless people whose lives you’ve touched. Only God knows why, despite all the outpour of love and support, things have to come to an end. But for now, at least no more pain na, Papa ko. I love you so much. You’re always in my heart.”
Who is Martin Diño?
Before his work as undersecretary in the DILG, Martin Diño was chairman of the Violence Against Crime and Corruption (VACC). He dedicated many years to fighting for the oppressed.
In 2016, he made headlines when he filed for his candidacy as president as part of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan. He later gave way to Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who became president and served the country from 2016 to 2022.
After Duterte won, Martin Diño was appointed as chairperson of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) before assuming his post in DILG.
Liza is married to singer and actor Ice Seguerra. She has a daughter Amara from a previous relationship.
