Netflix Charms With New My Melody and Kuromi Anime Series
All aboard the cuteness train as Sanrio’s My Melody and Kuromi come out with their own anime series on Netflix!
Some of us may not be familiar with the names “My Melody,” and “Kuromi.” But we’re pretty sure people are familiar with the name “Hello Kitty” and had often seen the merchandise for the cuddly cat at the old Gift Gate shop. Created by the Sanrio company, Hello Kitty eventually became very popular and even developed some supporting characters. So, if anyone out there is an avid fan of Hello Kitty, say no more as Netflix brings in an anime series featuring two characters from the Hello Kitty franchise — My Melody and Kuromi.
Who are My Melody and Kuromi?
My Melody perhaps may be a more familiar name for parents as the character was created in 1975. We probably saw her on notebook covers and other school supplies, marketed mostly for girls. Depicted as a white bunny with a pink hat that snugly fits over her ears, My Melody debuted as Sanrio’s adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood for the Japanese population. They often described her as Hello Kitty’s best friend!
Kuromi, on the other hand, is the mischievous and “darker” version of My Melody, which is probably why they have a show together. She was also designed in 2005, making a debut on Halloween. Originally, she was the “villain” of the Hello Kitty world but the franchise decided to make her friendlier, especially to her pink counterpart.
It’s kind of like Glinda (My Melody) and Elphaba (Kuromi), except cute and rabbit form.
What can we expect from the My Melody and Kuromi Netflix series?
Unlike most animated series, this one will be a “stop motion” series so, it may feel a bit more like watching Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride or Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Wererabbit.
Because of its execution, it may seem slower than most cartoons which was probably the producer’s intention. Studies have been popping out left and right, sharing that classic cartoons are less prone to creating screen addiction because of the story and dialogue’s pacing. With a much slower pace (due to technology), kids of the past still needed the dopamine and adrenaline rush they could get from playing outside.
According to the official page of My Melody and Kuromi on Netflix, the series would be based on the Japanese comic or the manga. As to how faithful it’ll be, no one is sure. But chances are, it’ll have some chapters from the manga that have been animated to give the story more context. One thing’s for sure, it’s going to be a series filled with cuteness!
The Japanese classic makes its way to Netflix!
My Melody and Kuromi are not the only Japanese series to make it to the streaming giant’s platform. Other animes such as current popular choice Attack on Titan and classics such as One Punch Man, Naruto, Carole & Tuesday, Code Geass, Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, and Ouran High School Host Club which many millennial parents can admit to growing up and watching with their peers after a long tiring day in school.
And with characters like Bluey, Gumball, Pinkfong, Steven Universe, Gudetama, and Labubu making waves among families, it’s no surprise that many toy companies are returning to the basics. Tentatively, the My Melody and Kuromi Netflix series will debut globally in July 2025.
