Things Kids Can Do To Stay Active On A Rainy Day
Here are some things kids can do to stay active on a rainy day
While older kids love rainy days, younger kids don’t. The teens see it as their “sleep” day, whereas younger kids groan and call rainy days “boring.” We totally get it; we’d be annoyed if the weather messed up our plans, too! There’s only one thing any parent can do when energetic kids get bored on a rainy day and school’s out: “play” the day away! Here are some things kids can do to stay active on a rainy day.

Bouldering
Although meant more for kids five years old and up, bouldering is a fun way to get the kids to improve their upper body strength and their spatial reasoning. And when they’re more aware of their spaces, they’re more confident. They learn how to command the area and air around them, being more controlled about their behaviors and movements. What better way to learn than via bouldering?
As of now, there are two common bouldering places in Metro Manila: one in Greenhills Mall and the other in Circuit Mall Makati.

Indoor Playgrounds
While there’s no exact place in Metro Manila that houses an obstacle course, indoor playgrounds are a good alternative. With the slides, ladders, monkey bars, and nets, the kids will be more than happy to test their limits. Energetic kids or kids with just way too much energy need an outlet, and these playgrounds (until school and team practice resume) will at least tide them over until school starts.

Yoga
Mommies are not the only ones who can enjoy yoga; kids can too! It helps them calm down and also strengthens their body, even when not doing something bouncy. While some parents just put a YouTube video on for their kids to follow at home, others who want a face-to-face session may have to head to the south for instructors. Some places, like Soulspace Yoga and Movement in Play, offer different yoga session packages for kids.

Pickleball
The latest sport, Pickleball, is all the rage, and most of the courts are indoors. With a smaller racket and something similar to tennis, it’s easier for the kids to get into. The rackets can be found in most sports shops, and beginners can use the typical cross-trainer rubber shoes first. Some malls do host pickleball courts, or if the family has a sports club membership, they can try playing there also.

Dance Tutorials
There are so many danceable songs now, it’s impossible not to find a tutorial that suits the kids’ fancy. Especially with the new movie, KPop Demon Hunters, releasing so many chart-busting songs like “Soda Pop” and “Golden,” it’s no surprise that content creators and even dance instructors are making videos to teach the dance. The best part is, the kids can learn the moves at their own pace.
Set up a little corner in the room with the TV and play the dance tutorial. Some kids can be a bit shy about moving around so we can leave them alone for a bit to figure out the moves.

House Chore Games
While this one isn’t particularly fun, it does get them active and prepare them for living alone when they grow older. Besides, with all the high-tech cleaning tools, it’s easy to clean a big area. If there’s a robot already sweeping the floor, then the kids can mop the floor. Mopping the floor is also important when we have pets. If we have guests who often bring in their shoes and track in dirt, who knows what kind of germs are living on the floor?
For house chores, we’ll have to gamify it a little and work our imaginations. Make them chase the dust bunnies like they’re sheriffs hunting tumbleweeds in the Wild Wild West. Or, let them mop up the black spore demons with their special demon-slaying mop. Something like that.
Keep the kids active on a rainy day!
While rainy days are usually a reminder for people to slow down, it might be impossible for some kids. Some are just born with unbridled energy, always seeking out the next thrill and adventure. Without any outlet, the kids get cranky, annoyed, and more prone to tantrums. There’s a buildup of frustration, and no one’s giving them ideas of where to put their energy. So sometimes, it’s up to us parents to find those outlets.
Besides, a busy kid usually means peace of mind for most moms and dads. It means we have time for ourselves or other things that need to get done.
