Family Favorite Returns: The Sound of Music Hits Cinemas for 60th Anniversary
The beloved 1965 film starring Julie Andrews returns for a limited run—just in time to share with a new generation
The hills are alive again! If you grew up singing “Do-Re-Mi” or daydreaming to “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” then The Sound of Music likely holds a special place in your childhood. Now, 60 years later, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic is back—remastered and returning to cinemas for a limited run this September.
On Thursday, August 14, a newly remastered trailer premiered on the film’s official social media pages. Ticket links have been posted on the movie’s website, with U.S. sales starting September 12, Canada on September 13, and globally on September 20.
SM Cinemas has shared a link indicating the film will hit local theaters on September 20 and 21.
Timeless and Family-Ready
Prefer to enjoy it from the comfort of your home? The film is also available on Disney+, so you can relive every note with your kids—snacks and all.
Based on the real-life story of the Von Trapp family, The Sound of Music follows Maria (Julie Andrews), a free-spirited nun who becomes the governess to Captain Von Trapp’s seven children. Through music and heart, she transforms their rigid, regimented lives—and ends up falling in love with their stern but kind-hearted father.
It’s a story of love, family, courage, and music set against the backdrop of World War II Austria. The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, along with a Golden Globe and BAFTA.
Why This Movie Still Matters
Whether you’re rewatching it for nostalgia or introducing it to your kids for the first time, now is the perfect moment to pass this classic down. The songs are still catchy, the values still relevant—and the love story? Still gives us kilig.
From Maria’s playful banter with the Captain to Liesl’s sweet “sixteen” moment in the gazebo, these iconic scenes will transport you back to your own childhood—and maybe become part of your kids’ too.
So grab your tickets (or your Disney+ login), warm up those vocal cords, and let The Sound of Music become a new family favorite—again.
