Not Just for Teacher’s Day: Everyday Ways Kids Can Show They Care

There’s nothing wrong with showing kindness—especially to our second parents: our teachers

Every year, the world celebrates World Teacher’s Day to honor the people we often call our “second parents” outside the home.

Like many professions, teachers face serious challenges. Around the world—including here in the Philippines—many continue to call for better pay, more support, and stronger educational systems. And yet, despite the difficulties, most remain deeply committed to helping students grow into the future leaders of our country.

As a tribute, here are a few simple ways kids can show love and appreciation for their teachers—not just on World Teacher’s Day, but every day.

Greet Them with Respect

A respectful greeting is a small gesture that can leave a big impact. Saying “good morning” or “good afternoon” isn’t just polite—it’s a reflection of how you were raised.

While respect is earned, it also begins with how we treat others. Greeting your teacher warmly shows you value their role in your life. Long after your school days are over, they may not remember your grades—but they’ll remember how you treated them.

Offer to Help Without Being Asked

If you see your teacher carrying heavy books, supplies, or other materials, offer to help—without being asked and without expecting anything in return.

It’s a simple act of kindness that’s often overlooked. And once again, it’s not just your academic performance that teachers remember—it’s your attitude and willingness to help.

Be Friendly, But Respect Boundaries

Teachers can be great listeners and even feel like friends or barkada at times. It’s okay to confide in them when you’re comfortable.

But remember: they are still your mentors. Keeping healthy boundaries shows maturity and helps maintain mutual respect. Getting too casual can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, so always be mindful of what and how you share.

Encourage Them with Kind Words

Teaching is more than just standing in front of a classroom. Many teachers work long hours—planning lessons, handling paperwork, and supporting students outside class time.

A simple note of encouragement or a kind word can go a long way. Whether it’s cheering them on during an event or leaving a thank-you note on their desk, your appreciation can make their day—and remind them why they do what they do.

Love Them or Hate Them, Teachers Leave a Mark

Whether you were their favorite student or not, every teacher leaves a lasting mark.

You’ll remember their lessons, their discipline, their encouragement—and how they helped shape the person you are becoming. That’s something to be thankful for every day.

FAQS: World Teacher’s Day

This year, World Teachers’ Day was commemorated on October 5.

While there are teachers’ day events in school, World Teachers’ Day is celebrated in giving to honor the teachers, who are considered the second parents of every child, and the work they do.
